We have shelled out an arm and a leg for two weeks here as my 40th birthday present from DP.
Just wondered if anyone has been and what you thought of it?

nearly went once-it looks fab. It gets great reviews too. You should have a great time.

Whooosh · 19/05/2008 14:01

Oh I hope you are right-we have gone for a two bedroom suite and DP has said if this isn't up to scratch then we will have to change rooms.

All reviews say good but you never know who is writing them or what sort of hotels they are comparing it to......

Also wondered if there are any orestaurants within walking distance.

Hi Whooosh - we've been twice to this hotel and it's FAB!!! Also on our recommendation, my parents went just before Xmas last year and also agreed with us that it's a great hotel. When are you going?
Ask anything - really - it's lovely!

Whooosh · 19/05/2008 17:01

Oh great-brilliant to find someone else who has been.....
Is it near anything else?-shops/restaurants etc?
Are the pools freshwater or seawater-I have read conflicting reports.
What are the kids facilities like?

You did say ask anythin so what was the best thing about it?

Top hotel in Limassol on Trip Advisor - reviews look very good.

VanillaPumpkin · 19/05/2008 17:20

I can't remember where Le Meridian is on the main drag but I can recommend Tokio Japanese restaurant along the front. Great entertainment from tappanaki (sp) chef personally cooking for you on a hot plate griddle thing. Delicious food too.
Also Little Plates is an amazing tapas style restaurant but you will need a taxi there and back (and prob to book...)
Have fun!

OK Whooosh - let me see what I can remember (haze caused by rather a lot of very good Brandy Sours from hotel bar - well recommended!!)...

Lovely rooms, large and always spotless. Facilities in the hotel - FANTASTIC spa - amazing spa facilities generally with indoor/outdoor pools and every single type of spa treatment - a real must. Also got a great haircut in the salon there.

We ate in the hotel quite a bit - it's outside of Limassol - which for my money is GREAT because Limassol (new bit) is horrid - all tacky bars and restaurants. So, we stay clear when we stay here. Have stayed in about ten 5 star hotels in Cyprus - we got at least once a year as my husband was born there - so I have to tell you it's one of the best if not THE best on the island. From recollection - there are both sea water and fresh water pools (indoor and out) - some are for adults only. We have two young children and the Penguin club is FAB. Kids loved it and went there quite a lot - leaving us time to go the adult only bit of the pool area for some nice peace without them! However, also brilliant pools for kids and playground. Loads of restaurants on site - at least 6 or 7 and a kids restaurant (they are SO well catered for). Love the ambience of the hotel - very luxurious but not at all snobby. Very relaxing. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT - and you will too!!!

We ventured into Limassol along the coast road from the hotel and there are a couple of restaurants pretty close by which do the usual fare - cheaper than the hotel but probably not as good! Also, if you do have a car - go to the Bunch of Grapes in Pissouri village - about 30 mins drive towards Paphos - beautiful village on the top of a hill (go to the old town) and this place does great food.

We are going back to Cyprus in July AGAIN and this time we are staying in the Aphrodite Hill Resort - also v. nice but my parents (who went to see it) said they preferred the Meridien. Don't worry - you will not regret going here. I'm REALLY picky about hotels and I couldn't fault it. Would go back again (and probably will) next year! HTH

Whooosh · 19/05/2008 20:26

Thanks guys-kind of why we picked it but you neve know...
We stayed in the Anabelle many years ago (probably it's heyday)and loved it.I think we stayed in Limoassol too many years ago and it was awful.
Paphos, which used to be nice,I think (and only my opinion) is a complete sh1tole and I suspect Limassol is the same.
However,I love the tips and am hoping the hotel will make it a dream holiday.

If you make it to Pissouri I recommend the Liminaki restaurant in Pissouri Bay (on the roundabout). It is so lovely. Bunch of Grapes is fabulous too but I have to rate Liminaki just above it for food. Mmmm.
I sounds wonderful. (And yes Limassol is a dump really.....we used to call it Limarseol .)

Whooosh · 20/05/2008 12:44

He he.

Love Japanese and tapas so that's fab and it sounds like we should definitely head off to Pissouri one day.

Dd is only just 3 so am hoping she will love the Penguin village so I can read a bit more than one chapter of a book this holiday

your little one might like the bird and animal park at Paphos....my DD really liked the chance to feed the giraffes.

When are you coming over? Its about 29C here today and great!!

Whooosh · 22/05/2008 19:40

Oh yay Sunnylabsmum-just what I needed to hear!
We cancelled a weekend in Barcelona lat week becasue the weather was so awful so in desperateneed of sunshine and swimming.

Animal park sounds fab-don't remember hearing about it when we atayed in Paphos before-are the animals in large enough cages/enclosures?
DD won't care but I do worry abour animal welfare wherever I am in the world.....

OP posts:
sunnylabsmum · 23/05/2008 09:29

I too usually hate these places, but this one was surprisingly ok. Most of the birds are in reasonable size cages and the animals are largely not in cages, apart from the obvious things like the snakes!! Try and catch the parrot show at midday or two pm I think. DD loved this loads.

Bird Park is past paphos on the road to coral bay and a bit further along on the left hand side. I think its a relatively new attraction.

Also the waterpark at Fassouri has opened for the summer season. Have not been yet, but friends tell me its a good place.

Weather was very hot last few days and now about average- 26/27C. Water is cold when you get in first of all, but seems ok after a bit. If you have one of those wet suit style things for little ones, it might be worth bringing if they spend loads of time on the beach in the water. Our favourite beach is at Curium. Go for either the middle or far end restaurants. The far end one looks ropey but food there was good.

Happy holiday!!

Whooosh · 23/05/2008 17:22

Thanks Sunny.

That temp sounds fab to me but I guess it may well be hotter in a couple of weeks.

What is the temperature like in the evenings? Long sleeves/cardigan/jacket needed?

OP posts:
sunnylabsmum · 23/05/2008 19:13

Yes at the moment long sleeves are a good idea, especially to avoid getting bitten.. don't forget the insect repellent and stuff if you get biten. I had a massive bite last week and tripped into a cypriot pharmacy to ask for anti-histamines. Got given a packet and when i got home realised all the instructions in english had been stickered over in greek!! Took one and then went on the internet to find that they were 24 hour tablets-good job I was cautious!!
