Stroller that will fit in the overhead hold of plane.

Baby will be 7 months old when we go. He’s on the 98th centile for height and weight. Any recommendations of a stroller that folds small enough to go on a plane but sturdy for his weight?

When we took stroller on holiday we kept it until boarding then airline staff took it to store and gave it back when we got off. It might vary depending on airport/airline but you may not need one that can be stored as hand luggage. (It is normally small umbrella fold buggies rather than proper ones is have noticed).

Yes, you wheel it right up to the plane then it gets folded down and the air crew stow it. They don’t go inside the plane itself

User9088 · 30/04/2025 16:50

A babyzen/stokke yoyo is probably the most recognised by air staff so easier at the airport as it's less likely to be questioned. It is sturdy enough for sure. Not the cheapest though.

Just to add the stroller is usually unloaded at the other end and placed at the plane exit/ bottom of the steps.
I've never seen a stroller in the cabin.

I’ve got a city mini jogger and put it in overhead of east jet on two separate occasions

No, you can get ones which are allowed in the cabin as hand baggage (we’ve got one).

OP there’s loads on the market, silver cross clic, babyzen yoyo, joolz aer, ergo baby metro etc. just check the spec on the website to confirm it meets the hand luggage dimensions.

Why do you want to put it in the overhead locker? It will take up the space of 3 or 4 bags and you don't need it on the flight. All airlines will carry a stroller for you (free of charge) — they take it off you at the door of the plane and put it in a specific section of the hold, and you collect it at the other end.

Sassybooklover · 30/04/2025 21:26

Usually you wheel the stroller right up to the aircraft, take baby out and the stroller is stored in the hold of the aircraft. I have never flown, and seen a stroller being put in the overhead lockers inside the aircraft.

For us, we don’t want to risk our expensive pram being damaged in the hold and also you usually don’t get it back until the luggage belt, we’d like to have it on exiting the plane. It definitely only takes up one cabin suitcase space or it wouldn’t be allowed on.

Zeitumschaltung · 30/04/2025 21:29

There are pushchairs made specifically to go in overhead lockers because people don’t want to have to wait for baggage reclaim to get them back. In some airports this is a long walk.
I didn’t feel the need myself but if OP wants one I suppose a tonne of posts telling hershe doesn’t need one won’t be particularly helpful.

anonny55 · 30/04/2025 21:30

Oo ok I’ve never travelled with a baby before and was under impression I could just bring a tiny pram that fit in the over head and that’s it!

You can OP, we’ve done it several times we have a Joolz Aer. We also looked at the Stokke YoYo and the bugaboo butterfly. There are a few Cybex that are cabin approved as well.

You can, as long as it meets the cabin bag dimensions of the airline you’re flying with. Alternatively you can gate check a larger one.

As usual on mumsnet you’re being confidently told wrong information by people who don’t know what they’re talking about 🙄

elm26 · 30/04/2025 21:38

We bought a cheap Zummi Eden for holidays and we were allowed to put it in the overhead locker, we’ve been to Portugal and Spain with it so far and flown with BA and EasyJet and never had a problem.

HerNameIsDebbie · 30/04/2025 21:39

Just be aware the "you collect it at the other end" is often on a separate luggage carousel after you've had to carry the baby all the way through the airport.
Not a problem for a small baby / if you take a sling / it's a small airport but having done this alone in enormous Schipol with a nearly 2 year old and not realising that I had to get my luggage first before finding said carousel, I invested in one of those that folds small enough to go in the luggage rack.

RareGoalsVerge · 30/04/2025 21:41

What's your budget? There is a stroller called TernX which is actually designed to fold into an enclosed shape that looks exactly like a mini cabin suitcase. But it's pricey.

TheCraicDealer · 30/04/2025 21:42

You can do it OP but the overhead ones are pricey, often have tiny wheels (crap for rougher ground and cobbled streets) and the seat is usually very reclined even when in the most upright position. I’m also not sure how it works now a number of airlines have reduced their carry on baggage allowances- I wouldn’t want to miss out on otherwise decent flights or pay extra because you couldn’t bring the pram on with that particular airline.

I got a cheap(ish) cybex as our travel pram and wheeled it to the steps of the plane on our trips, but took the babycarrier for getting on and off and back to baggage reclaim. I last did it when DS was 18mos old and managed ok, despite having the upper body strength of a newborn kitten. It’s only really the plane > baggage reclaim bit that’s the issue.

Around £200. I’ll have a look!

There are airports that give you your pushchair back at baggage claim, meaning you have to carry your baby the whole way. Cabin pushchairs are great for that reason as you keep it with you.

OP, previously we had the Baby Jogger City 2 and right now we use the Joolz Aer Plus. Both recline flat and are sturdy so I would recommend either of those.

@TheCraicDealerim going to bring my carrier but cant carry him in it for long even now as hes soo heavy

You definitely can and I would recommend. Strictly speaking some airlines say you can’t but we always do though every now and then you’ll get someone strict. We fly easyJet every month to visit family and in our four years of traveling with children, we have only had one occasion where they wouldn’t let us take it on board.

You mustn’t have flown very much then as it’s pretty common nowadays.

i had a Silvercross Jet. It was perfect for this kind of thing.
