South east asia in the summer school holidays

I'm consideriing a fairly last minute trip to south-east asia this summer. June or July. But I think this might not be the best time in terms of weather? Is it rainy season in Thailand? Cambodia, Indonesia? Where would be 'ok' weather-wise? Many thanks

You'll probably get some big storms but it doesn't matter because it's warm rain so it's actually quite nice. Also normally it will be a dramatic storm for an hour or two and then clear to sun again.

I’m from one of the south east Asia country.

it is monsoon season there, I would avoid Cambodia and vietnam. It can sometimes rain all day and cause flooding.

having said that, it is usually just a quick thunderstorm - which would be a nice relieve to the humidity. Weather wise, you should be okay in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It’ll rain, heavy thunderstorm, and it’ll pass and you’ll be all dry within an hour or two.

I went in August.

Thailand, Laos, Cambodia.

it was hot. The rain was pleasant reprieve. It rarely rained all day - an hour or two was more like it.

the heat was very unpleasant though.

It's not rainy season in Koh Samui, but it is rainy season the Phuket side of Thailand.

Dry at that time of year- Bali, Java, Borneo, central Vietnam, Brunei. However, I have also been to Phuket, Hanoi, Laos, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong in July and August and there was some rain, but didn’t really affect our plans.

@ShanghaiDiva did you find it oppressively hot or ok?

it was mostly fine except for one of trips to central Vietnam in July when it was over 40 degrees and so debilitating

June/July/August is the recommended time to visit East Coast Peninsular Malaysia or Gulf of Thailand. And the islands of both countries, on that side.

IME it's not the rain that is the problem (it's almost always a sudden torrential downpour, any time of year) but the monsoon winds which make the seas choppy, grey and cloudy. Which is not what you want to see on a dream tropical beach holiday.

It really depends which bits you’re going to, eg the east side of Thailand can be drier/very different to the west.

Our last trip was in a July. Bangkok was meant to be in the start of its rainy season, but there was actually a heatwave on (top of the 30s, pretty unbearable in the city if not for the hotel pool) and it rained once that week for about 10mins. We also did East Malaysia (on Borneo) when it was nearly always sunny … but it’s actually ‘dry season’ there in summer, so not a surprise.
Like others have said, sudden showers or terrific thunderstorms are nearly always welcome. I can only think of it spoiling a boat trip, or perhaps a visit to an outdoor animal rehab place. But there are always museums, cultural tours, or fantastic food markets to go to if armed with a brolly!

Malaysia and Indonesia are your best bets definitely, especially east coast Malaysia 👌

Vietnam and Thailand are ok in parts so depends where you want to go and how much you mind some rain/grey skies.
