Vietnam/Thailand/Cambodia in August - does the rain stop you enjoying yourself?

Just a very tentative plan for 2026 currently. I am aware that it is rainy season in Thailand etc, but how bad really is the rain? Is it enough to make the holiday a pointless cost? My initial research suggest the central areas in Vietnam and Thailand might be the best regions, but am I limiting myself by going in August?

We were there in September and it was fine! Few mad storms, some really bad days!

but most days it had periods of no rain at all and we could swim and do things

only thing is the beach’s can be quite dirty - as a lot of crap gets washed up on them with the rain and the waves can be a bit wild so not always possible to swim in the sea.

and you don’t really get that crystal blue clear water.

but it was so quiet and cheap and we had a brilliant time

Regarding Vietnam, it will be dry in the Central part while wet in both North and South in August (You can do a bit research on weatherspark site).

From memory the rain in Cambodia starts and stops fairly predictably. It’s like a torrential downpour that you can plan around and avoid rather than on and off rain for the whole day
