Alternative to Egypt

Jocelynjustwantsachance · 08/04/2025 14:38

I booked a week’s holiday for 2 teens and 2 adults to Sharm El Sheik for beginning of August. The family is now panicking about all the stories of food poisoning/ getting ill etc. I’m under pressure to change the holiday to something else. Any suggestions welcome please!

Canaries?

Egypt is pretty darn hot in August anyway, so it was always a bad idea.

We had planned a trip to see the pyramids. One teen and myself are keen on rich culture for our holidays. The other 2 are more interested in the sea/water activities but flexible.

Anywhere you would recommend? Thanks!

Turkey or Greece - plenty of historic and archeological sites although it will be stonkingly hot in August. We went to Ephesus in 40 degree heat some years ago.

Thanks. We went to Crete last year and loved it. Will take a look at Cyprus

Lake Bled? Bavarian mountains? Gorgeous lakes with hiking trails.

Pigeonqueen · 08/04/2025 14:52

Turkey, Croatia or Dubai? If you like history there are quite a few trips you can do around Turkey.

Oh wow, that looks like the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen! Will have these on my list. Thanks

My views on Malta are it's a very dull place to go on holiday!

Valetta on Malta is gorgeous- lots of history and very scenic.

Sharm el Sheik is nowhere near the pyramids anyway! Egypt was eyeball meltingly hot in October, there's no way I'd want to go in August.
Morocco might suit you, but probably has similar issues with food hygiene and temperatures.

fairgame84 · 08/04/2025 16:08

Tunisia.
We go every year as the in laws live there. There's carthage, el jam, sidi bou said and the star wars place to see.

I know. The plan was to fly to Cairo for the day 😀

Malta is horrible, it has very few redeeming features

Jocelynjustwantsachance · 08/04/2025 21:08

Quite a lot of anti tourism going on in the Canary Islands at the moment. Where’s the safest to go without upsetting locals?

Dubai if you like history is a strange suggestion!

Turkey, Izmir region. Can visit Ephesus. We did it in July and it was boiling but we managed.

Crete. Can visit Knossos. Home of the minotaur.

Madeira. Loads of amazing nature and awe inspiring views.

Corfu- the prettiest, most relaxing and most friendly greek island (my personal opinion of course)

Romania- Bran castle. Carpathian mountains.

Italy is a good shout for history buffs too. Not to mention the food.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 08/04/2025 21:19

It will be unbearably hot in August. That’s madness I’m sorry I went once in July diving and one man had third degree burns on his neck, granted he was not taking care but the sun there is brutal. March is nice there though. In August you will just be seeking shade all the time and the winds at night are like the worlds biggest fan heater

@Jocelynjustwantsachance ive just looked at the temps it says 37 degrees day and 26 night in august. In July it was pushing high 40’s at midday it was literally unbearable for me and no let up at night unless you slept with aircon all night . Having said that I’ve been in other cooler months and had a wonderful time, it’s mainly for the reefs snorkelling/diving. Not had a bad stomach either. If you can handle dry intense heat then it’s fine

Heat is not an issue. We’ve dealt with high temperatures in South Africa/Botswana etc. It’s the getting ill fear that’s making me change the holidays. Thanks
