Can anyone suggest somewhere that is cheap at this time of the year? This will be first two week break for my husbnad and I with out DCs for 25 years....so looking to do something interesting. Maybe back pack etc. Would like somewhere that is really cheap when you are there - not a package. Any ideas?

How cheap? Generally the highest costs with long haul will be yours flights. So they will vary a lot depending on where you go

Island hop around the Philippines? Friend's son is currently having a fabulous time.

Sorry should have said that DH has points/airmiles thing so not worried about cost of flight - but dont want to spend too much when there - we are pretty adventurous - off the beaten track back packing in India and Sri Lanka quite recently. Philippines looks interesting but maybe too beachy and expensive to travel about (think you need to get flights).

I hear Albania is absolutely stunning and still unspoiled.

If the flight's essentially paid for, Mexico and/or Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and maybe Nicaragua - double check that because I'm not sure how stable Nicaragua is at the moment, and they were very weird toward foreigners during COVID) could be a great cheap option at this time of year. Brazil is also tempting, but distances in South America could make it difficult if you have to pay for internal flights. The shorter distances in Mex/C America make things easier, especially if you can use miles for an open jaw.
