Luxury Rome at Christmas

We're thinking of going to Rome for Christmas. Can anyone recommend a really nice hotel that you've stayed at and loved. Been to Rome a couple of times, but not at this sort of accommodation level - preferably 5*.

Also, can anyone recommend somewhere for Christmas day lunch - I've read that if you stay at a hotel with a great restaurant (Michelin * type restaurant) you'll be assured of food, whereas many restaurants won't be open because its Christmas Day. I'd rather go to a good local restaurant for a typical Italian Christmas Day meal.

Thanks.

I've been at almost every time of year except Christmas so I'm afraid no actual advice but maybe some advice here?

There is a famously lovely market in the Piazza Navona as well. Rome based friends tell me that it is indeed true that the days leading up to Christmas are traditionally very quiet - many shops closed etc.

Thanks for replying, I've already looked at The Roman Guy.

I can't seem to find anywhere I can book for lunch right now (whereas I can book a table at the place we go to for Christmas lunch here already).

Absolute favourite for me is definitely the Russie. Otherwise the Hassler with a view from the top of the Spanish steps.

Oh … actually too late to edit but I suddenly realised this is for Christmas. The jewel in the crown of the Russie is dining al fresco in their incredible garden so maybe on balance the Hassler at that time of year?

I don’t have a hotel recommendation, but do Italians not eat their Christmas meal the night before, on Christmas Eve?

UserNo987654321 · 06/04/2025 07:07

I don’t think that’s right @percypig . I lived there for a while a couple of decades ago. I remember a big Christmas Day meal. I could be wrong, but that’s my memory.
