I hated Torremolinos...anyone else?

I've heard great reviews about Torremolinos, but it was concrete and more concrete. More foreign eateries than traditional Spanish restaurants and tavernas. I only ventured in the town centre and didn't see the beach front. The town centre could've been one in the north of England to be honest. People looked miserable. I prefer further down the coast, Estepona and Marbella and gorgeous Málaga. Luckily, it was only a one night stopover.

Where have you been that you've been disappointed with?

Nerja is beautiful, a few days there would be enough though

I love love Feungirola.

I was pleasantly surprised. Hotel on beachfront with roof pool was excellent and a few streets back away from the beach the restaurants were fantastic. Also, the best service ever from a branch of Specsavers after I lost my glasses.

Vitrolinsanity · 09/04/2025 13:24

I absolutely hated a holiday in Eilat.

turkeyboots · 09/04/2025 14:20

I love Brussels, but i worked there on and off for years and know it well. Everyone i know who had a holiday there found it too touristy, got robbed or rained on for the whole time.
I'm with the New York haters. It's fine, I just find it dull. Im not a theatre or shopping holiday person. You really need to have a local guide to get a real appreciation of thr place and i hate all back alley dive bars, always think I'm going to get killed in search of a drink.

I loved it when I went, but I was only six at the time and it was over 60 years ago 😆. It was really quiet and undeveloped back then and I can only remember there being one other hotel on the beachfront where we stayed. It has changed beyond all recognition over the years and looks like hell on earth now.

Hubby and I had our honeymoon there in 1971 and it was beautiful to our untravelled eyes. We went back in 2021 (around the time of our anniversary) and was dismayed at how much of a dump it had become.
We will be travelling through all of that coastline next month on our way to Algeciras for a Moroccan crossing but may well give Torremolinos a swerve.

I prefer Torremolinos to Benidorm - it's a lot less seedy. Good to hear Malaga is lovely as i have a weekend booked there soon!

Re: Malta, my DIL is Maltese. Apparently there's a lot of corruption so everything is being built on, even sites of scientific interest or where rare species live. A lot of the locals are really angry about this & how developed the island has become.

Oh absolutely! Felt the same about Benidorm. Everywhere smelt of dog piss!

Terrribletwos · 09/04/2025 15:00

And had dog shit everywhere too.

Hey@Words quick derailment from the thread theme if that’s OK. What parts of Tassie did you like? Might be heading that way soon for not-holiday reasons but may as well try to tack some extra time on if I can.

Words · 09/04/2025 15:52

Hi @MurdoMunro

I enjoyed the ferry over from Melbourne. Liked Hobart. Hired a car and stayed in an eco tourist place on the East coast before heading inland to cradle Mountain and South to Port Arthur. Visited a wildlife sanctuary to see Tasmanian Devils and I was actually allowed to hold a tame wombat.

Letshavetea1 · 09/04/2025 16:00

We ended up in Torremolinos for two nights several years ago. The hotel we had booked in Malaga was being renovated so we were relocated to their sister hotel (the Hotel Tarik). It was very nice and had a lot of Spanish people staying. I remember being impressed that the bar was still open when we arrived late at night. We thought old town Torremominos was quite sweet and it also proved to be a good base to drive to Ronda for the day.

MurdoMunro · 09/04/2025 16:11

Thanks @Words much appreciated. I will add ferry, Tasmanian devils and wombats to my list that starts with ‘penguins’

We have an apartment just along the coast from Benidorm. You can be down beside the beach in the evening and a van will pull up, out jump a couple of men and clean the entire area with hosepipes. Followed by a small digger which then cleans the beach area. You would not get that in the UK. Most resorts here are filthy.

And even in the town centres (Torremolinos, as mentioned by the OP), they are out cleaning the streets every morning.

No?

Tavernas are Greek.

Nearly there -- the word is taberna/tabernas in Spain.

I’m glad you said this as I’ve always wanted to visit New York but could never afford to go - seems like I’m not missing out on anything 😄

I love New York , its my favourite city , I’ve been 7 times, would go tomorrow if I could 🥰

Brendathebear · 19/07/2025 21:55

We have just come back from Torremolinos. It was booked last minute and I didnt know any areas in Spain. A few people told e that it was ike Benidorm and I thought I would hate it.

However, I was really impressed, the beaches were lovely, lots of Spanish restaurants. We had a relaxing time. Hardly any UK tourists - although it wasn't quite school holidays.

I didnt really like NY.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/07/2025 00:16

@Brendathebear it is like Benidorm and despite being a holiday snob I’ve been to Benidorm many times as my grandparents lived just outside for many years and I enjoyed Benidorm a lot ! The description you gave equally applies , except I think Benidorm has a better old town - I take as I find these days, I’ve loved places I should hate and hated places I should in theory love -

I'm the opposite - I'd heard only bad things about Torremolinos so was pleasantly surprised! I only spent about half a day there admittedly but liked the beach and all the chiringuitos grilling sardines.

lovemeblender · 20/07/2025 09:49

Costa del Sol is lovely in December, hired a car and went everywhere mentioned. Wasn't keen on Marbella though, it was full of people recruiting for plastic surgery.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/07/2025 13:08

OP I used to get Torremolinos mixed up with Tossa da Mar and assumed they were both not great. Then someone said that Tossa da Mar is actually quite nice in parts.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/07/2025 13:30

Carcassonne . Was really disappointing. Thought it would be a bit like York. But aside from. The castle there is nothing else to do.
