Travelling with different surname to China

Has any other single parents travelled to China with their child who has a different surname? My surname is his middle name
I’m aware we’d have to get the visa first - but need to obtain a letter of permission apparently (no contact with other parent) so wouldn’t be able to get one, but have travelled to Spain/Tenerife before without ever being asked. Obviously would have documents like birth certificate!
It’s not clear what information is needed and it varies from site to site
Im scared to book flights and be refused a visa/entry!!!! Has anyone done something similar?
thank you!!!

Big difference between China and Tenerife!

In order to take a child abroad you need permission from all with parental responsibility. If you cannot get permission from the other parent you can apply to the court for permission.
