Madeira language?

I know that Portuguese is the language of Madeira.
How easy is it to holiday there without knowing any Portuguese, only English?

Especially if you want to go self catering?

Very easy

It isn’t that difficult to pick up a bit of basic Portuguese before you go and show respect for the people whose land you’re visiting.

Very easy. Use Google or a language app to learn a few basics words so you can at least say good morning/ please and thank you.
Madeira is beautiful, enjoy

Exceptionally easy. Tourism is one of the biggest income streams the island has so a lot of locals speak multiple languages. But definitely worth learning a few Portuguese words as back up - please, thank you, bathroom, bill, etc. It’s such a lovely place and the people are super friendly!

Exceptionally easy. My brother in law is from Madeira. Attended their wedding in Madeira a couple of years ago and pretty much everyone we encountered spoke perfect English including his entire family - even the kids!

We recently visited Madeira, wow loved it, everyone spoke perfect English, and were very friendly and helpful.

Thank you for the replies.

I haven't travelled abroad a lot and only to countries where I do know at least some of the language.
I would try to learn a few words, as you say, but wondered if I would still be at a massive disadvantage being basically unable to understand or communicate in Portuguese.

The destination is the choice of a relative I'll be travelling with who also is at a standing start with the language.

I'd love to go there and just wanted reassurance about the language so thank you again.
