Due to travel to Bangkok early June for the first time in Asia.

Do you think the earthquake will be detrimental to the holiday ?

I appreciated that it has destroyed some families and homes and lots must be traumatised by the disaster.

Not sure if the hotel is affected yet …. I’ll check with travel agent on Monday .

Any thoughts or experiences?

There are some Thailand/Bangkok FB groups and I asked the same question on there as I'm due to fly out in 3 weeks. They said to remember that Bangkok is a huge city and the only building that collapsed was one under construction. It was obviously very scary indeed, but the airports are open and life is carrying on!

If people all stopped going, life would be even more difficult.

I think the only major damage was to the skyscraper that was under construction. I think buildings in Thailand are built with earthquakes in mind from memory. It’s a huge city and only one building was damaged.

We have family in Bangkok. They said their school evacuated but there was no damage or injuries.

The earthquake epicentre was in Myanmar, not Thailand

We are going next week. We have been in touch with our hotel and they have told us that everything is fine. We have friends who are out there at the moment and they also told us that everything is fine.

June is quite a while away, and unless there are any further incidents then it's not going to be a problem.

Thanks so much

@Summer24isRubbish

Just back - Bangkok is amazing.

It's very much "business as usual" there. The only thing we couldn't do was the Skywalk as they were closed for safety inspections, but everything else - including the Skybar was open.

Have a fabulous time!

@FrenchandSaunders

Here's what we did:

Grand Palace - stunning. Men must wear long trousers. No bare shoulders. Dresses/skirts should cover knees.

Sky Bar - try and go at sunset (and be prepared to pay ££££ for a cocktail!).

Asiatique - a bit "touristy", but there is a big wheel with great views. Lots of shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a theatre there called Calypso and the Ladyboy show is excellent. Very funny and very professional. Not at all seedy. It's a cabaret layout with tables and you can get food and drink there. There is a free boat shuttle from the Central Pier - runs every 30 minutes.

Chinatown - very full-on. Busy and noisy but we loved it.

There is a massive shopping centre - can't remember what it's called, but it makes Westfield look like a corner shop.

Jim Thompson house. Beautiful. He was a silk entrepreneur and art collector.

Tuk-tuks are plentiful and cheap.

There are numerous ferries up and down the river. They are cheap and frequent. It seems chaotic, but is actually extremely efficient and the staff were very helpful.

There is a great foodhall just by the Krungthep wing of the Shangri-La hotel (and very close to the Central pier.

Have fun!

@FloatyGoaty thank you so much, sounds fab.

FloatyGoaty · 16/04/2025 12:43

@FrenchandSaunders

Bangkok is huuuuuge. We were only there for 2 full days so we packed a lot in!

FrenchandSaunders · 16/04/2025 16:16

We're only there for 3 days so this is very useful.

Appalonia · 16/04/2025 23:56

I'm off there next week, so excited!
