Premium economy

We are planning a visit to family in Melbourne over Christmas and are thinking of booking premium economy either with Singapore airlines or Cathay. I’ve just read that premium economy seats are cheaper nearer the date of trip (it doesn’t pay to book early). Can anyone offer any advice? Could I book economy and then upgrade? Thanks!

I recently travelled premium economy to Sydney with BA and found it was cheaper the earlier I booked. Seats nearer the time were far more expensive. Upgrades were also more expensive.

Where did you read that info re pe seats being cheaper nearer to date of trip?.

In my experience seats tend to be more expensive the nearer you are to departure date on long haul travel.

Also they may well not offer you an upgrade if you book economy seats; people who are already One World alliance members with status tend to be prioritised for such. Both Qantas and Cathay are One World alliance members.

Yes, I was surprised to read this too. It was in a website called seatguru.

If you’re travellling Europe to Oz for Christmas I can’t see fares coming down, that’s pretty much peak season and flights, certainly ex UK usually rammed southbound pre -Christmas and similar northbound after New Year.

We recently flew P.E. with S.A., & on all journeys the cabins were full, so I'd advise booking early. The additional cost is worth it for long-haul.

BTW, don't forget to pre-book all meals in PE !
