Free accommodation but expensive flights?

Been invited to stay in a friend’s (lux) villa for a weekend in Menorca for her 50th bday. Originally we had to say no due to work but can now go… fortunately the invite is still open but the flights are £400 each. Usually I book flights way in advance so have never spent more than £200 for flights to Spain so £800 just on flights for two of us seems crazy. Would you do it?

Can you afford it?
If so just go, the weekend will probably cost around £1000 depending on what you do when you get there which isn't too bad for both of you.

Have you looked at taking an indirect flight, Expedia is good for checking these? Or flying on a slightly different day of the week even if it means booking a night in a nearby cheap hotel until the villa is ready? This could save a lot of money.

For a weekend, I wouldn't. Flights have got a lot more expensive recently, so I don't take them unless it's for an actual holiday / decent amount of time. I can afford it, but don't think it's worth the cost, compared to a longer break.
