NYC - is there much difference between July and August?

Hello- hope someone can help. DP and I are going to New York this summer and can only travel either the last week in July or last week in August. Although I really feel the cold and love hot weather I know New York gets extremely hot in the summer…however those are the only two weeks we could go. So I was wondering is end August noticeably cooler than end July or is there not much difference in temp between the two and are they pretty much the same? I ask because end July is our wedding anniversary so it would be nice to spend it out there but if end Aug is much better temp-wise then we’d wait until then.
Also is end Aug much quieter there than end July? Thanks!

July and August are both boiling hot. It doesn't start cooling off there until mid to late September.

As for being quieter in August, I'm not sure. There is a bank holiday on the first Monday of September and a lot of people build their holidays around that, and some people are bringing their kids to Uni in August. But the US Open starts at the end of August and ime New York is a madhouse pretty much 24/7/365.

I would say make your choice based on what's on at the time, or maybe on a better hotel deal, but not on July versus August weather or busyness. Happy Anniversary!

@ShrubRose thank you this is really helpful. I think we will go for July then unless the hotel is much more expensive then.

I've been the last week of August/ September and it was 40 degrees. It was very unpleasant to sightsee in, and I had to go buy lightweight jumpsuits as the pretty dresses I packed gave me the worst thigh chafe ever 🙈

Thanks @anon2022anon - definitely not making a decision between July or Aug based on weather then!
