Little coastal town with port in Europe

Hello!

I’m hoping you experienced lot will be able to help me because I think I’m looking for a unicorn…

Years ago I discovered Sitges and loved it. Loved the vibe, how close it was to Barcelona, the independent hotels, the narrow streets, tapas bars, beaches and promenade, you know that wander around in the warm evenings feel. That ‘where the Spanish go for the weekend’ sort of thing. Plus only 2 hours flight time.

I ended up going numerous times but all with an ex.

Fast forward a long time and I’m married to someone else and want to find a similar place but for us, actually is that childish and immature now I’m typing it. Should I just go back to Sitges and make that our new getaway place?

Or have you got a recommendation for a new getaway place that’s similar? There must be hundreds of these European coastal towns I don’t know about and I’d love to discover.

We go away on a big family holiday every year, Ibiza this year which I love too, and trips for us to the canaries without the (older) children in the winter but am missing this little breakaway place for weekends or midweek short trips.

Have you got a hidden gem you could tell me about?

Cassis! As someone has mentioned. It’s lovely

@Winterscoming77 do you have any recommendations for Sitges hotels? We have been thinking about this for this summer.

Ha, I saw your title and came to recommend Sitges!

agree with Cadiz. Loved it.

If you want something similar to Sitges and in the same area look at Calella De Palafrugell or Lla Franc on the same coast. But shhh don’t tell anyone as they’re my little secret.

MinnieMountain · 12/03/2025 06:31

I’m glad to see Cassis is recommended. I’m going in September.

I have a very fond spot for Le Touquet - fantastic beach and some lovely restaurants and bars. (It does get very busy in the summer season though)

Would also agree with Honfleur, although it’s noticeably more expensive than nearby towns. Just a warning!

Fly in to Nice (which is a lovely place itself) and then hop on the train to Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco, San Remo, Cannes, Frejus, Saint-Tropez... so many options!

LittleEsme · 12/03/2025 20:45

Nice is a personal favourite for me!

OP is Sitges a place you could go for a fortnight?? I'm looking for somewhere warm, beachy but with plenty for my sprightly octogenarian parents to do as well.

Porto - Amazing place

We going to Cambrils this summer. Estoril is lovely. Lagos really nice beaches. Great thread.

I like Tavira in Portugal. It’s close to Faro so it’s easy to get to, and the town is in two parts old and new, either side of the estuary. The beach is accessed by a taxi boat and is beautiful 🤩

Piran in Slovenia is nice- it’s quicker to fly to Trieste in Italy ( about 40min drive away) than Ljubljana . It’s such a small coastline in Slovenia that you can easily visit Croatia and Italy within 30 mins each Way of Piran.

Rovinj in Croatia- about another 1hr south of Piran.
