Hello, I'm planning to take my husband somewhere for his 40th late April, early May but struggling to come up with options in europe for (hopefully) sunny days! Also travelling from Scotland which slightly limits flights. We love beaches but realise its probably too early in the season for that. Looking for somewhere with a buzz - been to Barcelona, Palma, Florence, Lisbon, Porto and loved them all so maybe somewhere slightly off the beaten track? Thank you!

Seville? You'd get warmer weather there. Or Cadiz if you want the beach (easy to get to from Seville!)

Thank you @xmasdealhunter - I have looked at Seville but wondered if it would feel too grown up? Not sure what I'm basing that on (and realise we are in fact grown ups ourselves sadly!) so will definitely give it another look!

If it helps, my DD has been twice now with her friends for a girls holiday (she's 20!) There's lots of bars, clubs etc so definitely not just an older person's place 😊

I was also going to suggest Seville! I went years ago, in my late 20s, for a hen do.

@FSteph sorry to hijack your thread but how did you find Porto, considering it for a wee break early Sept but we are in our early 50's

Seville is probably my favourite city ever. Malaga too if you want the beach and hopefully good weather. The old town is lovely and near the beach. Sicily - Taormina could be another option.

@LuckyLinda3 i haven’t actually been to Porto but my husband has and thought it was great. I’ve heard nothing but good things from anyone I know who has been, so defintely worth looking into. I’m only ruling it out because I’d rather take him somewhere new! x

Thank you everyone! I’ll definitely look into Seville a little more! Sicily is also somewhere I’d love to go but thought Taormina might be too far from Palermo airport for a short trip? x

An alternative choice for a birthday weekend could be Nice. There are direct flights here from Edinburgh. Although it is not as hot as Southern Spain it should be quite warm in April/May. It has a beach, a picturesque old town and a buzzing port area. Nice also has a great market place with fabulous food from traditional french dishes to street food. If you like Museums there are a couple of impressive art museums. Depending on how long you stay you could easily travel to Monaco and/or Cannes on a train (or via a tour) for the day.

Catania is nearer to Taormina

FreezingJane · 05/03/2025 09:31

I visited Taormina last Sept and it was beautiful (about 45 mins transfer from Catania, so doable OP) - but we popped into Catania on the way home for the day and loved it too - a great underrated city. Taormina is perfect for a long weekend.

I'd probably avoid the rest of Italy because of the Jubillee year this year
