Pastries at breakfast - you also help yourself to a couple right?

Let me say this is lighthearted.

We’re on holiday , Tenerife, half board.

As we’re leaving breakfast we take a couple of the pastries to enjoy later in the day usually after the afternoon’s sunbathing.

It’s not just us is it?
As it happens we did see someone making up rolls with ham and cheese this morning but we’ve never gone that far!

If I am at a hotel with a buffet breakfast it will be 4 or 5 star so I think taking food from the buffet for adults is a bit off, I always assume staff will have what is ok after. I’m not a big breakfast eater so I only have it when it is included in the rate, not eating much at breakfast doesn’t entitle me to lunch as an alternative.

Always make cheese and salami/ham sandwiches and nab some fruit too for lunch. Wrap them up in napkins and chuck them in the handbag. My other half gave me so much shit on our first trip away nearly 15 years ago…which stopped the second he was starving at 11.45am and remembered I had some sarnies in my bag, which we ate sat on a little wall, watching the world go by. Dozens of holidays since, but always the same slightly crumbly sandwiches 😁. My excuse is that I don’t really eat breakfast so half board is wasted on me - I take my half board at lunch time instead. In reality though, my mum did the same and I can’t imagine not having a handbag that smells of salami on my hols 😂

Thanks for all the replies!

As @BunnyLake pointed out these aren’t the size of pastries you’d see in a cake shop or bakery counter in the UK. They’re 2 or 3 inches in size piled up in several baskets.
If our resort clamped down, we'd be ok with that too, we’d still return as there’s much more to enjoy than a lack of pastry pilfering opportunities.

I don’t usually eat hotel breakfasts as by and large they are overpriced and upf shite. Would rather go to a local cafe and get something. But I mostly travel for business.

having said that, I’ve probably done it in Scandinavia where the breakfast is usually worth eating. And the cinnamon rolls definitely are.

Some lovely snobbery on here towards holidays and hotels that do buffet meals.

Nice

These resort hotels are pre-paid though so whether you eat there or not it’s still part of the paid package. The hotels where you pay individually for items as you have them are a different matter.

LindaLeggings · 03/03/2025 11:38

@Bluh
I have plenty of joy in my life, I just don't find it in left over buffet food!
If other people do then they can crack on, my only complaint about the women in the hotel was that they left a right mess, eating crisp breads without plates is really crumby and they made zero effort to clean up.

Yeah never been on an AI holiday but I can see how if you’ve already paid for it then you’d fill your boots.

That seems a bit uptight. Was it a posher hotel? I stayed at the (can’t remember it’s exact name, something Salinas?) and they probably didn’t allow it as it was quite fancy. (Although I might be wrong and they didn't care, it was a long time ago). (Actually might have been Lanzarote).

Edited

🤣🤣 it was quite posh , not called Salinas though. There was a table where the confiscated items were left for all to see 🤣 It was mainly fruit , the odd banana or apple.

Oh Jesus, sounds like a classroom in there, confiscated items on the teacher's desk !😂

That is barmy! Were the guilty given detention and made to write “I will not pilfer the bananas” one hundred times. 😬

They probably would have liked to dole out that punishment. The fruit pilferers had to just do the walk of shame empty handed . Funnily enough they were very strict also with making you walk 2 metres to the exit and wouldn’t let you leave via the entrance!

Sounds more like a correction facility than a hotel 😯

Maybe there's a dress code of orange boiler suits too! 😂

Yeah there's always some posters who can never resist the chance to do a superior sneer. Not that it makes them look rather silly ...

Never2many · 04/03/2025 11:49

No I don't. I would absolutely judge the thieves that do. 😂 I knew there had to be one.

The hotels know that people do this and cater accordingly.

I personally don’t but it’s pretty much a right of passage.

AutumnCrow2 · 05/03/2025 02:01

Honestly, if in doubt just ask; don’t take the absolute piss; smile at the staff; and explain any special circumstances eg
medical reasons why you can’t eat till later (meds, gut issues).

PoopingAllTheWay · 05/03/2025 02:04

Yes i do at all inclusive holidays

But normally the yummy biscuits so i can have afew with my 10am coffee by the pool before the days activities

JohnTheRevelator · 05/03/2025 02:41

Of course. Why not? I couldn't care less if other people do.

TwinklyNight · 05/03/2025 04:58

I don't, but I would not care who else does.

CrazythenewNorm · 05/03/2025 10:13

Now I really want a pastry for breakfast 🤤

Timetoheal4good · 05/03/2025 10:20

Why would you genuinely rather something end up in the bin than someone eat it? There is literally no plausible explanation for this viewpoint 😂
Definitely some faux middle class snobbery going on here 😂

notatinydancer · 05/03/2025 10:21

I don't.
I saw a family take a carrier bag full last year.
Also saw a hotel last year where there was a notice telling you not to.

socks1107 · 05/03/2025 10:21

I don't but I definitely don't judge those who do and think it's a good idea! (May do next time..)

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 05/03/2025 10:27

If it's breakfast they're providing then it seems like stealing to me if you eat breakfast and then take something to have for your lunch as well.
