Pastries at breakfast - you also help yourself to a couple right?

Let me say this is lighthearted.

We’re on holiday , Tenerife, half board.

As we’re leaving breakfast we take a couple of the pastries to enjoy later in the day usually after the afternoon’s sunbathing.

It’s not just us is it?
As it happens we did see someone making up rolls with ham and cheese this morning but we’ve never gone that far!

No I don't. I would absolutely judge the thieves that do.

Redcrayons · 02/03/2025 17:08

I’d raise an eyebrow at someone getting a Tupperware box out, but a couple of croissants and a banana are no big deal.

apart from the fruit, how much of the breakfast buffet will be brought back out the following day?

You'd hate me. I take ziploc bags on holiday. Make up two small cheese rolls for kids at lunch and take 2/3 pastries and 2/3 pieces of fruit.

It's going in the bin/out the following day what difference does it make. There's plenty

No, no difference. To you anyway.

gmgnts · 02/03/2025 17:21

One hotel I stayed in offered an empty box for 10 euros at breakfast if you wanted to make up a packed lunch from the buffet. I thought this was a really good idea - we would often go out walking for the day and there was nowhere to buy a sandwich from in the vicinity. It meant I could make up filled rolls and take fruit and pastries guilt-free!

The first time I went to the US (Florida) my mouth was literally gaped at how high people piled their plates. Then on top of all the savoury food would be a pile of sweet food (literally on top). That was one place you couldn’t help but notice people’s plates, they were like mini skyscrapers lol. No idea if they took any out with them and wouldn’t have cared if they did.

Edited

I know. I remember one time in Florida there was a man who took out a plastic bag and filmed with one LOAF of toast bread, and different cakes. There were no chocolate cake left for my dc (which was all they were looking forwards to as it’s a treat for breakfast. Noone said anything either. 🤣

Digdongdoo · 02/03/2025 17:28

Fair game in my opinion. I usually only eat a light breakfast, whereas some people will scoff multiple plates. What's the difference? We paid the same, I probably still took less food.

CantWaitForSummerHeat · 02/03/2025 17:28

Surely if people are waiting until the afternoon to eat pastries they’re soggy with the heat? Just go and buy them for goodness sake, two pastries will hardly break the bank.

minipie · 02/03/2025 14:51

hmmm maybe justifiable if they were leaving that day and nowhere to buy sandwiches at the airport… <scrapes barrel>

What airport have you ever been to that wouldn't sell you a (disappointing and/or overpriced) sandwich? 😂

Also Dd and I have done close analysis of the Premiere Inn breakfast buffet policing and have come to the conclusion that a) taking a hot drink up to your room or in a travel cup and b) leaving with a piece of fruit in hand are perfectly acceptable as the vast majority of people walked past the staff with one of these two things and nobody gave a damn. So we now make it a point of principle to take our “hand fruit” on the way out (and we do always eat it later!).

Yoghurt for me as the walking out in hand item. You can eat it in the room with one of the teaspoons #toptip

No, I absolutely never do that and I don't look kindly on those who do.

Why do you not look kindly on those that do?

How is it thieving? You pay for breakfast - assuming there is no rule (not a socially imposed rule set by other holiday goers - i mean a genuine rule imposed by the company that is providing the breakfast you paid for) that says you must only take this much food then how is taking the food stealing?

I’ve worked in a hotel and pretty much apart from the fruit it goes. You can’t reserve food that’s been “on table” Quite often leftover pastries and muffins will go on the side for staff to have elevenses.

Laura36TTC · 02/03/2025 17:36

Sometimes I’d lift a banana but that’s about it

Beziers airport at our last trip was unable to sell us anything as their systems were down so it can happen.

Bluh · 02/03/2025 17:38

If it’s a pool/ beach type resort with ridiculously expensive food then, yes, I take rolls, butter, ham and cheese, yogurt, cake etc for lunch. I mean if dinner is £200 then they can spare me that….

stayathomer · 02/03/2025 17:38

As long as there’s loads left for other people. I wouldn’t myself at all but I can be ott with that sort of thing!

How do you suggest that you, as a guest, is capable of deciding that there is ’loads left’ for other people? That is quite a skill.

stayathomer · 02/03/2025 17:44

fivegreenmonkeys

well if there’s only five or six left nobody should take them, a huge mound I’d say op is safe personally

giggling at the fact that you’d, not only find this hard, but also think it’s a flex @fivegreenmonkeys

Only on mn can folk get worked up about a bloody croissant

I was being ironic. I found it quite funny to claim that it is ok as long as you don’t snitch it all. Surely that is the staff working in the kitchen that would know how much stock they have etc.

BunnyLake · 02/03/2025 17:54

BowTiesPinkTail · 02/03/2025 17:32

Because of a sense of superiority in some holidaymakers (sorry, travellers). Frankly I’m surprised that those on here tut tutting about a pastry even lower themselves to an AI type set up or pre-paid breakfast buffet. A la carte all the way, surely?

If it’s not eaten it gets thrown away, someone might as well eat it.

This.

There is SO MUCH food waste at hotels, you'd be staggered.

So take what you want, or it would go in the bin. The hotel won't care.

CrazythenewNorm · 02/03/2025 18:54

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/03/2025 16:35

Maybe. Though in a hotel where management are overzealous enough to have staff confiscating food from guests, my bet is on it being more about having an eye on costs and reusing that food rather than doing so in order to “treat” the staff to what they confiscate.

Edited

I agree, I wouldnt mind if this was the case. I think holiday goers at the end of the breakfast slot may be doing everyone a favour clearing them out (if it is a very expensive hotel). They'll then have to make fresh breakfast food the following day at least.
