Pastries at breakfast - you also help yourself to a couple right?

Let me say this is lighthearted.

We’re on holiday , Tenerife, half board.

As we’re leaving breakfast we take a couple of the pastries to enjoy later in the day usually after the afternoon’s sunbathing.

It’s not just us is it?
As it happens we did see someone making up rolls with ham and cheese this morning but we’ve never gone that far!

Nope, I’ve done this, and contrary to most people on this thread (it appears), think it’s a bit cheeky.

TheAmusedQuail · 02/03/2025 12:05

I'm not really a breakfast eater (not a virtue, my stomach just doesn't wake up until a couple of hours after my brain) so if I only ate what I was able to in the dining room, they'd make bank from me. So yes, I absolutely do take food out with me.

It's always eaten by 11 though. Just can't choke down rolls/pastries 1st thing.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/03/2025 12:11

It's a bit tight just buy some lunch you're on holiday.

Marmite27 · 02/03/2025 12:21

Last time we were at a Premier inn, we were up early to have breakfast before Parkrun. I asked the staff member if the children could take a pastry and fruit for afterwards. We were told to take what ever we wanted. It was just the pastries and fruit though.

When we got back, the kids barrelled in to tell the staff member how they did, and were asked if they were still hungry. Next thing I know, they’re sat down for a second breakfast and the staff member had gone off in the back looking for bananas for them as there were none on the counter Blush

MissEloiseBridgerton · 02/03/2025 12:29

For me, it's no different to restaurants boxing up leftovers to take home?

user2848502016 · 02/03/2025 12:32

Of course, you've paid for them why not. We don't tend to take stuff for ourselves but DC never really eat a massive breakfast so we will often take a couple of pieces of fruit or muffins for them to have as a morning snack

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 02/03/2025 12:49

I think a pastry or bit of fruit is fine.

If I've paid for a buffet breakfast and don't have to rush off I'll sometimes ask if I can take a coffee or pot of tea and a pastry to the lounge after I've finished eating to enjoy whilst I read the papers (on my phone obviously!).

FictionalCharacter · 02/03/2025 10:37

No, I absolutely never do that and I don't look kindly on those who do.

You sound great fun 🙄

ExtraDecluttering · 02/03/2025 12:57

No, I think it's cheeky and not a good example to set to the DC. Irrational really but it's just not something I'd do. Perhaps if one of you didn't eat breakfast and wanted it later but not if you've eaten a reasonable amount and it's going to be lunch.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 02/03/2025 12:57

No I wouldn’t / don’t do this. Wouldn’t want to be carrying it around.

Ihateslugs · 02/03/2025 13:04

I was once in a hotel in Austria on a B&B basis and someone from our group made up a takeaway lunch while having breakfast - meat and cheese sandwich, hard boiled egg, pastry, fruit etc. it was a fairly basic hotel, clean enough but a bit run down and the meals were generally on the cheap side!

She tried to hide what she was doing but the owner spotted her carrying stuff out so the next breakfast he stood in the doorway watching her closely. I warned her but she carried on and actually asked me to get her something! As we got on the coach for the day trip, the owner came up and told her that he had added the cost of the packed lunch onto her bill! The Rep then announced on the coach that it was not acceptable to take food away after breakfast as a packed lunch was available! I was so embarrassed for this lady but she seemed unaffected!

FlatErica · 02/03/2025 13:05

No, I wouldn't. It looks greedy.

WeirdSponge · 02/03/2025 13:06

Taking a small pastry or piece of fruit- fine.
Making yourself up a packed lunch- not fine.

purpleparrotthe · 02/03/2025 13:10

Normal
Sometimes I cant be bothered with the hiding and waiting until no one’s looking so i don’t bother
not worth the stress

What's the matter? Did you pay for them/make them yourself?

NotaRealHousewife · 02/03/2025 13:22

I couldn't be bothered but have no issue with those that do it

GetMyAgentOnThePhone · 02/03/2025 13:26

I don’t but give no thought to those who do. I might take some fruit but that’s it.

Ellmau · 02/03/2025 13:28

I think it's a bit tacky.

Pushmepullu · 02/03/2025 13:29

I don’t do it and do judge those that do.

The items on a buffet breakfast are there for BREAKFAST. Not lunch or a a little snack because guests are too stingy to pay for them. Go AI if you want free all day food.

We stayed in a hotel that had a lot of people on walking tours. Lots of them would turn up for breakfast with Tupperware boxes and fill them. It meant that the items would go down quickly and weren’t always replenished therefore denying other paying guests from having the choice they expected.

No, I absolutely never do that and I don't look kindly on those who do.

Why?

I’ve done that loads of times (pastries not rolls). I could either eat them at the table or wrap them in a napkin and have later. I’m talking one or two pastries. I don’t think people are bringing an empty suitcase and filling them with breakfast buffet goodies.

FabuIous · 02/03/2025 13:31

We do sometimes. Don’t have a huge amount at breakfast, so it doesn’t feel like we’re taking more than our share.

Kneidlach · 02/03/2025 13:32

FictionalCharacter · 02/03/2025 10:37

You won’t ’look kindly’ on me then. I’ve never been a breakfast person, I just don’t like eating that early. So on holiday I’ll often have a coffee at breakfast and take a couple of pastries for mid morning.

And even doing that I’m slightly annoyed that I’m paying the same for my breakfast as those people who are eating (at least) a massive plate of food at the breakfast buffet.

caringcarer · 02/03/2025 13:32

I might allow DC to take an apple or a banana for later but I wouldn't take pasties, no.

KittenPause · 02/03/2025 13:33

I did it more when the DC were young so they had something to snack on

mitogoshigg · 02/03/2025 13:36

I grab an apple usually, but to be honest I book ai these days at that sort of place
