Coaches between Gatwick and Heathrow

I am flying from one and returning to another this summer. Was horrified to discover that the train from the Midlands would have cost £600 for three adults - obviously I should have booked sooner, but it's February! So I am driving so will need to get a coach from Heathrow to Gatwick when we return. Does anyone know if I need to book in advance? With the Flixbus there doesn't seem to be an option to have an open ticket but there seem to be hundreds? Will this cost me a fortune does anyone know?

Well surely a taxi divided by three is looking cheaper than that!

Rebootnecessary · 18/02/2025 16:06

Would it be easier to park your car at the airport you are returning to?

MiddleAgedDread · 18/02/2025 16:10

I think @Rebootnecessary is onto something here.....if you're returning to Heathrow then that's closer for getting home to The Midlands. So park there, hop on the coach (which should be fairly easy to pre-book a time for as you know what time you need to be at Gatwick for check-in) and then when you get back you're straight into your car and heading home rather than an hour on the bus in the wrong direction.

Thank you all but God no! I get stressed flying as it is and don't want to be parking and then having to take the coach to fly. Also, I think parking at Heathrow is more expensive than Gatwick? Two years ago I paid more than twice what I've paid today for just over half the time. Don't care how long getting home takes as long as I get there eventually! Also, three adults is me and two teens - adult coach fares but no one to split a taxi with!

Why don't you get a coach from the Midlands? That must be cheaper than the train?

Melancholyflower · 18/02/2025 18:41

The Airline coach service goes from Oxford to Gatwick via Heathrow. A single from Heathrow to Gatwick costs £15 and they run hourly throughout the day.

@pinotnow look at VIP parking. I've done the Heathrow/Gatwick combo several times.
They will pick the car up from you at one airport and drop it off to you on your return at the other. Very efficient and reasonable prices.

Which airport are your departing from? If a morning flight, I'd recommend staying the night before. Heathrow T4 premier inn has a walkway connected to the terminal. Gatwick has either a PI or Travelodge across the road.

National express! https://www.nationalexpress.com/en/airports/gatwick/heathrow-to-gatwick

Or hire a car and drive to Gatwick?

Littlebrownfreckle · 18/02/2025 20:41

We use the airline coach service.

you have to book a specific time but can get anytime if you’re there earlier or later than expected.

rookiemere · 19/02/2025 14:15

@Littlebrownfreckle - we need to get the coach from Heathrow to Gatwick so hoping I can pick your brains please.

How much time do you think we should allow from arrival to coach booking ? It's an internal UK flight with hand luggage only.

If we buy the National express fully flexible fare does that mean of we get there earlier we could take the earlier coach without having to amend anything online ?

Littlebrownfreckle · 19/02/2025 22:25

@rookiemere we are usually through and on the coach in about 30 mins with just hand luggage. Never used the national express so not sure. But with The Airline then yes you book a time but can get on any one, without amending. They usually go once an hour.

If you did go for a taxi it’s £70.
