Capsule wardrobe Japan

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had been to Japan in April and if so what kind of things were good to pack, I'm assuming light layers would be best.

No idea but the exchange rate should be in your favour. Buy it there!

Definitely layers. It will normally be warmer than April in the UK (one trip I was there in April and it was mid-20s), but you can get a cold snap, and if you are going further north than Tokyo or up in the mountains anywhere (eg spending a night or two in Hakone or Koya) you will need something warmer. Take a jumper/fleece and a raincoat, and possibly a really lightweight packable down jacket.

Uniqlo do lots of good stuff so if you find you need something you haven't brought, it is easy to buy it there unless you are a very non-Japanese size (very tall or plus-size).

And don't forget that you will be walking a lot and taking shoes off all the time so take really comfortable shoes without lots of laces.

@SoloSofa24 fab, thought that would be the case. Definitely like a bit of Uniqlo so that's a good option!

@HeCharters do you reckon I can use that excuse for jewellery and handbags! 😉

Following with interest. We are going in May and I am planning on everything being able to mix and match. Sticking to mainly navy and white. I have read that bright reds are less commonly worn, although I doubt I shall blend in so perhaps should not worry!

Longhotsummers · 16/02/2025 20:41

I found Uniqlo sizing very very small in Japan. Some of the XL was too small for me and I’m a 10!
As others have said, layers and a good raincoat.

InSpainTheRain · 16/02/2025 21:05

Beware, sizing is v small in Japan
So it will work for handbags OP but for clothes I would take them with me. In April it can be sudde ly pretty warm and then cold with showers so layers and a waterproof definitely needed

SoloSofa24 · 16/02/2025 21:10

I am a UK size 14/16 and I have never had any problem finding Uniqlo stuff to fit me in Japan, though I guess I never go for the very tailored or slim-fitting styles of things. It may help if you go to the big branches in cities where they stock the full range of sizes. And for t-shirts, fleeces etc you can always try the menswear section. The one thing you won't find in Japan is a bra to fit you if you are a typical British shape! And women's shoes stop at about size 5 in most places.

Hotels in Japan all have coin laundries, which is fabulous when you are travelling.

Rents out capsule wardrobes while there. Check what they offer for spring and dupe it.

Lightweight layers and comfy shoes.

Make sure you’ve got a waterproof and shoes that will keep your feet dry in the rain.

If you care about sticking out then avoid bright colours and if you re wearing anything strappy or sleeveless then wear it layered over a t-shirt. Japanese women generally don’t show shoulders and wear muted colours. You don’t have to blend in though, people aren’t going to be upset or offended by foreigners dressing differently.

Genius, this is a really helpful hack. You can roughly match to what you have.
I never knew hiring your holiday clothes were I thing, mind boggled.

This only works if you're tiny. Even a size 12 needs to go to an outsize shop. Fat girl anyone? Genuine name from Japan

That idea of renting a wardrobe while there is genius!

I had heard about the laundry's so that's good to know they are definitely a thing!
