So fed up with this January weather so want to book somewhere for next January. We don't want to do long haul as in Caribbean or Thailand so thought about this area. I've never been and probably have negative images of the place. Can you recommend somewhere based on - don't want a place with loads of kids or other noisy boozy adults, just want to relax and get some winter sun. No need for nightlife, bars etc. Not fussy about all inclusive. Budget is not an issue.

We're just back from GC and stayed in Puerto Rico. Weather was 25-27 every day. Warm enough for the sea (and my kids are fussy). Lovely heated pool also. Take a cardi for night time.
Puerto de mogan is beautiful but a bit too quiet for us. Amadores beach is stunning.

Pusspot · 14/02/2025 20:18

@MarketSt did you get a connecting flight from a bigger island? La Gomera looks like a nice peaceful place. Thanks!

friendlycat · 14/02/2025 20:32

Puerto de Mogan Gran Canaria. We go every Christmas. Just lovely.

Or Playa Blanca Lanzarote around the rubicon marina.

Titasaducksarse · 14/02/2025 20:42

We personally hated Gran Canaria. Liked Lanzarote. Fuerteventura I last visited 25 years ago...was nice.
The Canaries aren't somewhere I'd be inclined to want to rush back to, to be honest.

Cape Verde is another option.

Yes we were toying with that! Thanks

Again thanks to all. Guess what I will be doing this weekend.

Tenerife Costa Adeje is the best- we go every year for the past 6 years! Lovely beaches, lots of restaurants and live music/entertainment. You will love it. Del duque area is very nice or if out of budget torviscas or fanabe, all areas are along the seafront and walking distance from each other.

EasterIssland · 14/02/2025 20:55

Lanzarote or Tenerife and visit the area. They both have really nice national parks

Which hotel did you stay in? I prefer personal recommendations for heated pools as sometimes it says they’re heated but not great

SpacedFan · 15/02/2025 09:31

@pusspot I go to La Gomera every year, beautiful place. We fly to Tenerife, hire a car and get ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera, which takes about 45 mins

Pusspot · 15/02/2025 09:34

@SpacedFan thank you! That sounds very doable, as we would hire a car anyway.

snoopyfanaccountant · 15/02/2025 11:03

We had a great week in Funchal in Madeira last month. We didn't hire a car but instead booked some trips with Hit the Road Madeira.
We have also had some January sun in Lanzarote, staying at Hotel Costa Colero which was lovely.

Boope · 15/02/2025 13:37

My favourite place is Lanzarote.
We've stayed here a couple of times in January. The hotel is half adults only and in January we have never noticed any children. We stay HB but you can do AI or B&B. It's seafront with beautiful views and lovely walks in either direction.
Along the seafront are several other adults only hotels.
The weather in January is usually pleasantly warm by day but cool in the evening.
PB is a tourist resort but fairly quiet.

We love Lanzarote and have been many times. We usually rent a villa (not the same one each time) in Puerto Calero which is a bit more upmarket than some of the resorts. You can walk along the cliff to Puerto del Carmen and get the water taxi back. Playa Quemada has 3 lovely restaurants, 2 quite rustic and traditional.

Playa Blanca is lovely particularly the marina area (rubicon).

Steer clear of Costa Teguise, it's a tip full of irish bars and english breakfasts.

Lots to see and do on Lanzarote too, for instance, the bus tour of the lava fields, visit the caves, walk along the beach at Caleta de Famara and watch the surfers (or surf too if that's your thing).

I so agree.
I have a villa at Casas del sol in Playa Blanca.
Love Peurto Calero.

ljhlousnbehm · 15/02/2025 19:30

If you are considering Cape Verde avoid Sal which is just a characterless sand pit. OK just to fly into, maybe overnight but then fly on/ferry to other islands which have more to offer. A different proposition to The Canaries as it's a lot poorer and less developed but we liked it.

We fly into Tenerife South and then get the ferry from Los Cristianos.

Very nice to leave that part Tenerife behind.

Mumof1andacat · 15/02/2025 23:44

Two lovely holidays in Lanzarote. As a person who likes geography, I find the landscape fascinating. A trip to Timanfaya National Park is must.

stanleypops66 · 16/02/2025 16:49

@pawpatrollerr
We stayed at holiday club Puerto calma. My friend was staying at GRUPOTEL revoli. Both pools were equally warm where everyone could get straight in. We went to Chester's beach club and that was heated even warmer!

Pusspot · 16/02/2025 18:13

@MarketSt thank you - this is a possibility for next winter.

TeenLifeMum · 16/02/2025 20:34

We went to puerto mogan last summer and it was lovely. I’m looking forward to February trips there when dc finish school.

mommyfinger · 16/02/2025 21:33

Puerto Mogán Gran Canaria. Gorgeous place

TheOnlyMrsW · 17/02/2025 13:34

We love Fuerteventura - off there again in a couple of weeks as it's less touristy than the other Canary Islands, Corralejo in the north of the island is lovely and chilled out - we've been in April, August and October and always had good weather. Plenty to do if excursions are your thing, but compact enough to just potter if not. We tend to book flight and hotel separately rather than a package, then hire a car as it's cheaper than airport transfers and public transport isn't always brilliant.
@ljhlousnbehm where would you recommend in Cape Verde - I've almost booked it a couple of times but we're not keen on AI and there doesn't seem to be any other options?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 13/02/2025 21:27

Yes I was coming on to say this! Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria is ideal. We've stayed in the Cordial Mogan Playa Hotel which was beautiful but if I went again I think I'd love to stay at the Livvo Puerto Mogan. The weather is always beautiful in Mogan, lovely restaurants and not too busy.

Hello, is it an easy walk from the hotel down to the town? It looks lovely but I can’t seem to find any info on whether we can walk or need a taxi etc
Thanks 😊

stockpilingallthecheese · 17/02/2025 22:54

HelloDaisy if you're talking about the cordial then yes, there is a gate at the bottom of the complex and you're in the centre and the beach in 2 mins.

TheFairyCaravan · 17/02/2025 22:55

We really don’t like Lanzarote. You couldn’t pay me to go back there.

We love La Palma. It’s not touristy at all, the landscape is so different to the other Canary Islands, it’s unspoiled and the star gazing is amazing. If you want something a bit more touristy then Fuerteventura is really nice.
