So fed up with this January weather so want to book somewhere for next January. We don't want to do long haul as in Caribbean or Thailand so thought about this area. I've never been and probably have negative images of the place. Can you recommend somewhere based on - don't want a place with loads of kids or other noisy boozy adults, just want to relax and get some winter sun. No need for nightlife, bars etc. Not fussy about all inclusive. Budget is not an issue.

Gran Canaria was lovely when we went last year we stayed just outside maspalonas needed a radiator fet to the town so v quiet but that suited us
If I was returning I would stay in Puerto morgan. We went for the day absolutely stunning!! Quiet quaint and so picturesque plenty of nice bars/resturants on the front but not massively built up!

2nd this for Gran Canaria - for somewhere quieter I’d avoid Puerto Rico and Playa de Ingles but Morgan and Maspalomas are lovely x

fussychica · 13/02/2025 17:08

We like staying in the hills behind Playa Blanca in Lanzarote. We have a villa with a heated pool and go down to the front for prom walking, coffees and the occasional meal. Lots to see around the island.
Just returned from our first proper trip to Fuerteventura. Incredible beaches but I just didn't warm to the island so unlikely to return. Weather was 20-23 by day and 15 at night. Lots of sunshine and windy some of the time.

We went to Lanzarote one new year and it was low 20s during the day and sunny, so very pleasant. It was a bit chilly in the evening, but 4 hours from London I thought it was a very nice place to escape to in winter.

As for you, I'd recommend Puerto do Mogan, which we really liked. It's a nice little port town with a beach and restaurants/bars on the beachfront promenade. There are a number of hotels to choose from. I thought Maspalomas was very modern and a bit sterile, but there are some lovely hotels there, so it depends what you like.

Thank you for these recommendations. I appreciate it. Will now go and do some googling!

Yes I was coming on to say this! Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria is ideal. We've stayed in the Cordial Mogan Playa Hotel which was beautiful but if I went again I think I'd love to stay at the Livvo Puerto Mogan. The weather is always beautiful in Mogan, lovely restaurants and not too busy.

Sanch1 · 13/02/2025 21:33

Cape Verde is another option.

Moier · 13/02/2025 21:38

Playa Blanca Lanzarote is for you.
Tenerife and Grand canaria are loud and busy.
I own a villa here..
All private owned but loads rent out .
Communal warm pool. No pub/ restaurants .. but right across the road is a small complex called playa Limones with supermarket / restaurants etc.. and the new lovely ferry port ( can get a ferry to Fueterventura).
There is a bus ( no 130).. that's goes all round the resort and stops at various areas.. the Rubicorn marina is stunning and beautiful boutiques and up market restaurants and a great market on weds and Saturdays.
There is a lovely front with restaurant s and nice walks.
Playa blanca isn't rowdy .. you won't find night clubs and karaoke.. but great restaurants and bars... that you might want to do self catering.
If not plenty of hotels to suit everyone.
I've just got back last week and it was great sun bathing weather.

We just came back from Tenerife and stayed at the royals corals beach in La Caleta. It was absolutely superb. Beautiful rooms excellent weather lovely location great food in hotel and locally. There are 2 royal corales on the same site and one is adults only which we went to. Fab roof top pool. Weather was gorgeous- do it !

sankacoolrunnings · 13/02/2025 21:59

Gran Hotel Palacio De'Isadora in Tenerife is beautiful. There are families/kids there but separate adult areas.

Barcelo Santiago also in Tenerife also good and stunning views, some of the bars outside a bit loud but they have to stop at 12.

Yes - we stayed here last year. Beautiful place, and quiet.

Fuerteventura also a great island, but I wasn't so keen on Tenerife

artfuldodgerjack · 13/02/2025 22:39

Have a look at Madeira. It was lovely.

hellswelshy · 14/02/2025 17:21

Gran Canaria is lovely, we stayed in Meloneras, pretty and quiet, not far from shops and restaurants. Recently we went to Lanzarote, stayed in Playa Blanca but right over the far side near H10 Rubicon. We stayed in Hipotel Natura Palace, loved it and recommend the area if you like walks as it has a promenade that you can walk miles either way.

user2848502016 · 14/02/2025 17:27

If you're going out of school holidays it will be quiet with not many kids.

Steer clear of the main resorts and you'll be ok.
My parents love Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. They aren't keen on nightlife just like somewhere chilled with nice restaurants

Anjelika · 14/02/2025 17:33

Another recommendation for Puerto Mogan. We went in Jan and stayed at the Radisson Blu. It was lovely. Easy walk into town and some great restaurants.

MarketSt · 14/02/2025 17:46

We like REALLY quiet. So it isn't for everyone but we really like La Gomera.

Tiny island. Very unspoilt and very little tourism.

DD0 · 14/02/2025 17:48

We've just got back from a cruise around all the canary islands and we liked Madeira the best - by far! Lots of greenery, botanical gardens etc and just generally a very pretty place. Very different from all of the other islands we visited which are mostly volcanic so you don't get the same scenery.

Think it is Corales Suites?

Peekingovertheparapet · 14/02/2025 17:49

I love Lanzarote, particularly Costa Teguise. I think the Barcelo Lanzarote Active, particularly Royal Level would be a good match.

MarketSt · 14/02/2025 17:49

Had to go and remind myself of Hotel name - Jardin Tecina.

Katherineryan1986 · 14/02/2025 17:54

We love Lanzarote and have been many times. We usually rent a villa (not the same one each time) in Puerto Calero which is a bit more upmarket than some of the resorts. You can walk along the cliff to Puerto del Carmen and get the water taxi back. Playa Quemada has 3 lovely restaurants, 2 quite rustic and traditional.

Playa Blanca is lovely particularly the marina area (rubicon).

Steer clear of Costa Teguise, it's a tip full of irish bars and english breakfasts.

Lots to see and do on Lanzarote too, for instance, the bus tour of the lava fields, visit the caves, walk along the beach at Caleta de Famara and watch the surfers (or surf too if that's your thing).

MessyNeate · 14/02/2025 17:57

We've done Costa Adeje two January's in a row now. We stay up until the hills where it's quiet and verture to the main area by the beach for meals etc. not too rowdy and some lovely restaurant

sunshinechaser · 14/02/2025 17:59

We've stayed at Bahia Del Duque hotel in Costa Adeje in Tenerife lots and it's really lovely. Amazing service, great restaurants and fab spa. I would totally recommend it!

Another vote for the cordial in Puerto de Mogan, I'd recommend going B&B as there are so many lovely restaurants in the resort to choose from. The spa was nice, the hotel rooms are a bit dated but the grounds are lovely and we really liked the beach and resort. Would absolutely go back!
