Santorini - would you cancel?

Due to go late summer. Travel agent says wait and see but I just want to cancel and go somewhere else. Am I being ridiculous?

Why, what's wrong with Santorini?

Chocolate85 · 10/02/2025 21:50

Anything could happen between now and late summer, I’d wait. If it’s not safe (extremely unlikely I would imagine by then) then you won’t be allowed to go anyway. It truly is stunning though so I’d go if you can (and it’s safe).

Werecat · 10/02/2025 21:52

I’d still go. If unsafe you won’t be allowed. If not, you’ll have a lovely time.

Scatterbugg · 10/02/2025 21:52

I'd call your insurance and check you are covered. A lot of insurers don't cover for natural disasters so this is worth checking before you pay the balance.
If you can't get cover and you have free cancellation now then I'd cancel and rebook nearer the time if all looks ok.

@sallysoup there have been earthquakes and they are worried about a volcanic eruption

Thanks, haven't seen the news today.

If the travel company cancels (which they will if there is still a problem by then), you will either get a full refund or the opportunity to pick an alternative holiday.

If you cancel, you’ll lose some money. That may just be your deposit at this stage - you’ll need to check the terms and conditions to find out how much you’ll lose.

So, your choice: make the decision now and lose some money or wait and see and not lose any money.

HellofromJohnCraven · 10/02/2025 22:45

Yes. If you can or transfer without cost I would do it now.
The entire point of a holiday is it's something to look forward to, not fret about
Obviously we all hope nothing happens but if you transfer now you will lots of options, not so much nearer the time

Numberedout · 11/02/2025 00:32

I would cancel

Floralnomad · 11/02/2025 01:10

I’d see if you can change it to somewhere else otherwise it’s going to carry on being a worry .

Britneyfan · 11/02/2025 03:43

Yes I would change it if you can if it were me.

coralsky · 11/02/2025 04:25

In summer? It's only Feb ffs.
Wait and see what the situation is then.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/02/2025 04:28

No, don't cancel because there's a chance of an eruption. Either it will have happened by then or the probability will be minimal.

If you can switch though, I would. I found it an over-rated, over crowded, island.

borntobequiet · 11/02/2025 05:27

The current concern is about earthquakes, not eruptions.
Greece in the summer is too hot nowadays. Go somewhere else instead.

CharlotteCChapel · 18/02/2025 09:48

I'd wait if booked but would avoid the area if booking now.

TheBirdintheCave · 20/02/2025 22:28

We're holding on until April when I'll make a decision based on how things are looking then.

If the quakes are still happening we'll likely cancel our flights (accepting the cancellation charge) and then we'll still have time to book somewhere else.

DuchessDissasster · 21/02/2025 00:11

I'm not usually bothered by things like this but because of how small and rocky parts of Santorini are I would be concerned there is nowhere to escape to if there was an issue and there was any sea problems. It's a beautiful island. I really hope it stays safe.
