Hi my daughter turns 21 at the end of March and I feel very lucky that rather than a party she’d like to have a week on holiday somewhere beautiful with me. She’d really like to go long haul (as she’s only ever travelled in Europe) but really she’d like a boutique style pretty hotel (not loud and brash) but with a twin room..Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps you’ve been somewhere on an all girls trip that fits the bill?

I wouldn't recommend long haul for just a week as you'd spend a big % of the trip travelling and/ or being jet lagged!

If going LH I'd choose somewhere without a big time change like Oman, South Africa, Mauritius or somewhere with a shorter flight time eg New York, Morocco

Chewbecca · 10/02/2025 14:54

How's your budget?
Treasure Beach on Barbados would be gorgeous.

Adamante · 10/02/2025 15:01

I'd go to Dubai but MNetters will melt down now at that suggestion 😉😁

PsychoSyd · 10/02/2025 15:02

Seville. It's around 25 degrees & sunny. Plenty of boutique hotels around the old quarter area.

jenthehen · 10/02/2025 15:05

Thanks @YoYoFlo that’s really useful info. I’ve been looking at Mauritius but can only find honeymoon or family hotels, nothing really inbetween. I’ll have a look at your other suggestions too. Does South Africa have somewhere that offers a chilled holiday location without hiring a car? The garden route looks lovely but that’s something I’d probably do with my husband.

@Mum5net Malaga is definitely somewhere on my list to go but more for a long weekend I think. She’s been to Spain a few times so for her birthday I think she’d like somewhere different, but it’s a great suggestion ☺️

@Chewbecca off to check out treasure beach, thanks for the suggestion.

@Adamante ..she said she didn’t want to go to Dubai..maybe she’s a future mumsnetter 🤣🥴

@PsychoSyd I think Seville is beautiful and I’d be there in a shot but it doesn’t fit her outside of Europe criteria..she may change her mind though.

Madeira ? I haven’t been but it’s on my list to do with my daughters, my friend says it is really lovely.
If you want long haul go to Seoul, it’s fabulous, but yes the jet lag is brutal.

Strengths · 10/02/2025 15:19

Morocco would be my pick. Very different to Europe, lots to see and do and as it's not too far, no long flight or jetlag. A riad in Marrakech can be absolutely stunning...
I also think it's a good time of year to go as not too hot or too cold (though probably a bit chilly for a pool holiday).

jenthehen · 10/02/2025 15:20

@Christwosheds Madeira is a good call, I’ll have a look to see if there are any stylish hotels. @Chewbecca …my budget sadly isn’t that strong …

@Strengths she wasn’t too keen on Morocco as some of her friends went and didn’t have a great experience unfortunately. It does look beautiful and exciting but I think she’d rather go there in a mixed group.

Thailand, or Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai (same climate but very different and much nicer)

MichaelandKirk · 10/02/2025 15:54

I have stayed at the Cliff Bay in Maderia. Really nice and Maderia really came into its own during Covid where they made it as easy as possible to travel and stay there. Taxis were cheap. I wouldnt stay in the town centre though. Bit of a shopping mall.

Avoid Reids Palace and the Savoy. Lots of old people having tea!

Also stayed at Quinta Da Casa. More boutique like and rather glam.

Have also been to Seville and really liked it. Jet 2 fly to Maderia which might be useful for you and also do some packages to the hotels mentioned.

Paradise Cove is fabulous (booked ours via trailfinders)

jenthehen · 10/02/2025 16:08

@MichaelandKirk thr hotels look lovely in Madeira but they are giving more mature vibes which would be fantastic for myself and my husband but possibly a little too mature for my daughter, but thank you

I went to Monaco with my Mum for my 21st. We had lunch at the Rascasse - I know it’s long gone - won’t forget it though.

jenthehen · 10/02/2025 20:45

@justoneday that’s so lovely. I hope to have the same memories with my daughter

Cape Town in South Africa is really nice, and not much of a time difference.
If you go through somewhere like Trailfinders, they will recommend really safe gated accommodation - then just use Uber (taxis are really cheap there) to get you down into the town.
There are lots of really nice bars & restaurants and the cost of eating out is about half that of the UK
Taking a cab out to the cable car and going up Table Mountain is lovely (there’s a restaurant at the top)
Also a 15 minute helicopter ride along the coast is very memorable.
We spent 4 days there & took our then 23 yr old (g) and 18 yr old (b) in 2023 (we went in July which was chilly at night, but mild during the day)
We then hired a car and drove the Garden Route for 7 days before flying to Mauritius for another 10 days, but the Cape Town part alone was great.
All organised through agent, so had a mixture of boutique holidays and more traditional ones.
Enjoy, whatever you do.

I have been to Aruba with my daughter and we both loved it. The flight time and time difference isn't too bad (we only stayed for a week), We stayed at the Adults only Rui hotel (which was lovely) but there are nice boutique hotels as well.

Bogfrog · 10/02/2025 20:54

I also love Cape Town. My mum took me when I was in my 20s and we had a great time.

i’ve since been back twice more. Once just with my husband, and again with my husband but also our kids.

You can easily spend a week in Cape Town. It’s easy to spend hours at the V&A harbour with the shops and restaurants. You can do a trip to Robben Island, which is fascinating. There’s lots of wildlife to see like the whales and seals. A trip down to the Cape of Good Hope is a must and of course table mountain. There’s also beautiful botanical gardens.

As you can tell, I love it!

Valeria Malaga

Went with DD then aged 22 to Malaga for four days in February. We had a balcony room. Lovely time. Wasn't hot, but we could take our coats off!

Highly recommended! Literally just returned from the Valeria today. Beautiful weather, caught the sun on the beach and had a wonderful four day stay in Malaga with so much to do/see.
