Has anyone taken a baby to the Caribbean/Dominican republic? Worried about typhoid etc

Hi all,

Has anyone taken a baby to Caribbean/DR?

My baby will be around 9 months by the time we plan to travel, so won’t be old enough to have the typhoid vaccine. I know I wouldn’t be giving the baby tap water and would be careful with what food I give them. But I’m concerned about the risk. We’re looking to stay at a Royalton so I’m assuming all will be clean etc.

Please let me know your experiences and if you think I’m overthinking or not!

Why not just go somewhere else?

We went to Mexico and Cuba with an under 18 month old and did not get any additional vaccines. This was sometime ago however so not sure if the advice has changed.

Your response isn’t helpful and doesn’t add anything to the conversation.

It’s for a family members big birthday. I have OCD and health anxiety so trying to figure out if I am being irrational due to that or if I’m being reasonable.

If the consensus is that it’s a nightmare I obviously will choose not to go, but nowhere online says that infants shouldn’t go there. Hence my question of people’s experiences.

If you are staying in a tourist area, resort etc I think you will be fine. Just be aware of what you are eating and use bottled water. At 9 months they will be eating little anyway. When we went we stayed in AL hotels except in Havana and I just ensured dc drank bottled water, we had no ice etc. we had amazing trips.

Well that’s the trouble with Mumsnet isn’t it? You couldn’t “hear” my tone if voice as I typed. It wasn’t said in a snarky or offensive tone, I was merely suggesting that if the destination was making you feel anxious, that perhaps you should wait until your child was older before travelling there.
If you’d stated that it was for a big family get together, then my advice would have been different.
