Not for me but for my dd.

Any suggestions (assume I'm an idiot) gratefully received

Book seat reservations - she needs to make an account on here, and then she can add the seat reservations to her cart

Book seat reservations

Search for train times of most trains across Europe and book your seat reservations.

Thanks. She's hearing all sorts of dramas about how difficult it is despite the app

It's cheaper to do it on websites /apps of individual train companies. The apps are really useful to download anyway as they'll tell you about delays and even platform numbers.

You can also book some journeys in Europe on the ÖBB (Austrian railways) app. I think that's the one where the cost is per journey not per train so can work out cheaper if your journey involves several changes.

We're doing this for trains in Belgium, Germany & Austria at half term, and making the reservations via the Deutsche Bahn site was about half the cost of doing them via the Interrail site. You just check "seat reservation only" when you book.
