US Mumsnetters, would you advise agsinst travel to Florida with T***p in power?

My daughter(13) is due to travel to Florida with school this year. We live in the U.K. I was already having to work hard to prepare myself for her going but with everything surrounding the new government in the US I’m wondering if it’s going to be a safe place . She is LGBTQ+ and some friends that she’s travelling with are too, although none are trans. It’s just a week with Disney-world, Epcot, some shopping and a trip to the Everglades, They are travelling with a travel company, and I’m hoping they will fill us in about how safe it will be and advise but if they don’t I want to have good information for myself!

I lived near Orlando for a few years, and went to Disney a lot with the DC. Your DD will be perfectly fine re LGBT.

I would be more concerned about the FAA crisis. The recent crash caused by this air traffic controller crisis/shortage in the US was a wake up call and lots of recorded near misses are now being dug up by investigations.

Well your daughter is only 13 so I assume she won't be having sex with anyone, male or female. I also assume that she and her friends won't be waving rainbow flags and distributing leaflets. I would hope that, as children, they will be enjoying the actual purpose of the trip (Disney, Epcot etc) and have a memorable holiday rather than treating it as an opportunity for activism.

Unsure what you're scared of? Your daughter/friends are LGB or 'Q' or '+' but not 'T' - can you tell this by looking at them? I'd be worried if my 13 year old was Q or + - but not because she would be unsafe at Disney.

I’m worried about changes in security measures around police and armed forces mainly. It seems from here that trumpy and his government can do whatever they want, and that might extend to the general public not knowing what is “acceptable” and getting into trouble as a result.
I asterisked his name because I can’t stand him and don’t want to write it out. No worries if anyone else does.

Nothing is going to happen to a bunch of British school children on a trip to Florida. The Americans they meet will be friendly and charmed by their accents.

I’m reading and hearing so much about people being afraid to stay living there, people losing their jobs and being threatened for being part of a minority group, feeling unsafe and it’s only the first month he’s in.

I’ve seen some of those videos and lots of them are recorded by over reacting clowns. Some of them are laughable.
Nothing will happen to your daughter and friends. They’ll most likely have an amazing time

If you don't like the politics of the country veto them spend your money in countries whos politics you agree with.
