Hi all

Im not sure how to go about surprising my husband with a holiday for his birthday. Im not great with doing surprises. Should I surprise him a few days before so we can be abroad for his actual birthday and make use of the weekend. Or should I surprise him on the morning of his birthday so the flight is the same day? Also how do I get him to book some A/L without getting suspicious. Im so confused please help! Thanks

Would he like a holiday as a surprise? Are you absolutely sure?

Wouldn't it be better to say 'let's go on holiday for your birthday'?

Send him a postcard when you get there.

I told my husband we were going away but didn’t specify where we were going so he booked his A/L and then I told him on the day we were flying where we were going 😊

I think it really depends on if he likes surprises or not! My DH hates surprises so I wouldn’t do this for him and I’m a control freak and book all our holidays so would not like him doing it!
Such a range of possible ‘best ideas’ OP but you’re the one who knows your DH best so I suggest you go with what you think he’d be most receptive to.

Same. I don't tell him where we are going until we get to the airport!

problem is booking time off or does he doing anything on said dates. Does his passport need renewal

You will have to tell him on these dates i am planning something fun so clear your schedule

My husband did this he told me the day we were going away and coming back that was it I got through to departures and was having a Prosecco before I found out 🤣

Can you contact his manager in secret to ask for A/L ?

Check his passport is valid

Etsy have some scratch card things that you can give him on the morning or just kidnap him and take him to airport

It's his big 40th so I thought it would be a nice surprise, he will definitely love it. It will just be 4/5 day city break. His birthday is not until Autumn so quite a while to go. We go away in the summer so will definitely check his passport for that. (Great tip thank you)

Usually when we go away I do all the packing for him anyway, and he never has a clue where and when we are going even after telling him a million times. He'll just stand at the departures board asking where are we going again lol.

I can try email his manager secretly, not sure if they will need his authorisation. Love the etsy scratch card idea thank you. I will definitely be using that.

I'd just tell him you're planning something and can he book xx days off work for it. He doesn't need to know what or where.

Travelcrazy · 31/01/2025 16:07

I told DH on the day, I got to him to book days off by saying that I was treating him to a few nights in London and then on his birthday instead of a card I gave him a postcard of the beachfront that I bought online. He said what is this and I replied where you will be in 7 hours! he loved it :)

I surprised my husband with a holiday a few years ago now for a big birthday, I know some of his work friends so had one of them arrange his annual leave so he didn’t have to even know he’d be off work, packed our cases and told him we were driving to the shopping centre so he had no idea until we pulled up in the airport carpark!

Shows how observant (or not!) he is that he actually never even realised we weren’t driving the right way to the shops😂

Changingplace · 31/01/2025 16:27

I’d tell him you’re booking it and the dates but keep the location a surprise if he’ll like the surprise.

DH did that for my 40th - tbh I wasn’t keen on not knowing as I prefer to enjoy looking forward to where I’m going as part of the fun so I’ve asked him not to do it again!
