What are your recommendations for european City breaks? Where did you love and why? I want to try and visit a couple this year with DC (6 to 12). We usually do beach holidays so the only city breaks we have done are Rome, Budapest and Paris.

Munich. DS loves technology, I love Germany.

Our favourites (in Europe) with kids have been:
Rome, Venice, Berlin, Paris -
great food, all the sights they recognised, picking museums/galleries that were suitable for their age. Berlin and Paris were very easy to use public transport to get around.
all time favourite for the kids was New York though.

Honestly you can't go wrong with pretty much any choice, they all offer a fun long weekend. I would probably pick either Berlin, Krakow or Barcelona based on where you've done already as these offer some of the very well known sites. Krakow is beautiful and it's got Auschwitz and Wieliczka salt mines nearby. Berlin you have the Reichstag, the Berlin wall and some fab museums. Barcelona obviously has all the Gaudi stuff. Honestly though even if you picked somewhere completely offbeat, like Eindhoven, I think you'd still have fun. I always have a few options in mind and then pick the one I can find the cheaper flights for.

We loved Copenhagen. Lots of kid friendly sights and museums (World Guinness Records and Illusion) plus Tivoli of course. We did a canal boat trip too. Loved everything about it and the shops for me and the food and the people!

We've not long been to Avignon which was gorgeous.

My favourite is Athens.

We had an amazing time in Seville!

We took our DC to Berlin one October half term when they were primary school age . Took them to the Zoo , The Tiergarten and The Reichstag building and the east side gallery plus other places.Great city for walking around and the u bahn is easy to use too.

We stayed at a hotel called Louisa's Place which had a two room suite with a kitchenette plus a conservatory off the main bedroom which was a bonus. It also had a pool in the basement.

Also did Seville with the kids. I think they were less interested by it than they were Berlin but we loved it for the amazing restaurants.

Another vote for Berlin for all of the reasons already mentioned. It's one of my favourite cities.
I'm also very fond of Belgium. Brugge is the obvious short break destination but I think Brussels is very underestimated. My kids loved visiting the Atomium and Mini Europe when they were younger and there are some great museums including the Comic Art Museum and Autoworld. Plus some great architecture, waffles and chocolate!

Thanks for all the suggestions, they will all go on my list. Berlin seems to be very popular and probably a city that its good to visit all year round? I forgot that we have been to Barcelona aswell but felt unsafe - I think because of the tour guide on the bus telling us to be careful of pick pockets etc, it was like a long lecture so felt serious!

Yes I agree Berlin would be a good year round destination. We went in October half term a few years ago and it was lovely. I would imagine it would be quite appealing in the Winter too. If you do go and the weather is reasonable, it's a great city to cycle in and there are lots of bike tours available. We used Berlin on Bike which was excellent and I would definitely recommend, but I have heard good reports of others too.

We loved Lisbon with our DC. There’s an aquarium, science museum, trams and funiculars to keep them entertained. We also took the train to Cascais and spent a few hours on the beach.
