Where to go: sun, history/ culture/ not manic

For the past few years, I've taken my 2 (now 19 and 8) to all inclusive type resorts in Europe. However, whilst I love not thinking about money & letting them eat what they want, when they want, we don't really use any of the facilities other than the pool and beach and have found some of the resorts a bit much. Both children have ASD and just want to swim in the sea/ pool and chill.

We'd like to be within walking distance of a town/ village and with places not too far away that we can visit.

We loved Croatia so was wondering about that but the kids also fancy Italy and want to go to Pompeii - I know it'll be very hot in the summer. Or maybe further afield? The Caribbean is similar prices and we're ok with a bit of rain, if it's warm and nice.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go/ where to stay. We're open to anywhere.

Thank you

My two daughters are both asd. We liked Italy partly because of the food - one of them was extremely picky and some destinations were a disaster food wise. But not Italy. Tbh we ended up mostly holidaying in the UK because they didn't cope well abroad. We used to stay in a place with swimming pools and horses in Cornwall. But Italy was our best foreign destination for sure (and Bruges, but I don't think that's what you are looking for!).

We're open to anything so happy to hear your experience- thank you. Where in Italy was good? Thankfully mine are pretty good with food but I know that can be a tricky issue on holiday.

We've had great holidays in Devon, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight, just fancied somewhere warmer this summer.

The area of Begur in Spain is amazing. Old towns, Roman ruins, great food. Several beautiful coves to swim in.

Fly into Gerona, hire a car, nice villas and hotels in the area depending on what your preference is.

Croatia should tick all your boxes. Further north along the coast is a bit less hot and a bit less crowded which is nice.

We did Rome on its own. Also Sorrento and the lakes. My two don't like kids stuff particularly - happy to just hang out with us.

Other good holidays were a cycling holiday in Brittany where we cycled from hotel to hotel through Headwater Holidays. And we did Florida successfully one year too, but we were only there for a week as that's all they can cope with.

The Dordogne? Le Banquet at Les Eyzies is walking distance to town and has loads to do in the nearby area, castles, caves, canoeing etc. You'd need a car really though.

How about Lake Garda in Italy. There are some great eurocamps around the lake if you wanted swimming pools and facilities on site to entertain kids. Lovely towns around the lake, as well as Verona, Venice and Milan all an easy train ride away for days out.

We stayed at Monte Dourado apartments in the Algarve. There are about 5 pools shared between only about 100 apartments plus the beach & town are close by. We hired a car to see a few local sights too. It's a really beautiful place
