Hi everyone, heading to Vienna in May for three nights and was hoping you might have recommendations for accommodation. 6 friends so happy with two hotel rooms or Airbnb.

Vienna is quite pricey, museum entry fees particularly, worth it though. We went between Christmas and New Year. Aim for something inside the ringstrasse so it's walking distance to the majority of the tourist things. We stayed near Westbahnhof, at Brauhof Wein, it was nice but I chose it mainly because we booked fairly last minute and it was pretty much the only affordable option for a family. Also about 5 days before you go check what museum ticket availability is like for the very next day, if limited or none book tickets in advance. At Christmas you had to book upper Belvedere, Hofburg and Schonbrunn tickets about 3 days in advance in order to be able to visit. I don't really like pre-booking and having a fixed itinerary, but sometimes you have no choice.

I can't recommend accommodation but I can recommend sachertorte.

We stayed in the Hotel Capricorno in Schwedenplatz and I can't recommend it enough. It's modest (3 stars I think) but the rooms are spacious and immaculate and the breakfast is very pleasant. They even do free coffee and cake every afternoon. So well situated too. Loved Vienna! Don't miss the Hundertwasser Haus.

Thanks for that recommendation, it sounds great. I want to go to Vienna again this year - loved it last year - and Schwedenplatz is right at the heart of everything. Plus the bus and tram stops to everywhere are right there. This is a good call @hollyolly !

Figlmueller for schnitzel, behind the cathedral. Hotel Sacher do take away Sachertorte. Watch your valuables on public transport.

Following with interest @hollyolly as we are hoping to go to Vienna later on this year. I like the sound of @Sparkletastic afternoon coffee and cake hotel!

My top Vienna top is if you want to see the Spanish riding school then check out the practice sessions in the morning. Much cheaper and good explanations of the training routines.

We stayed at the Aparthotel Adagio when we went a few years ago - reasonably priced, very clean, great staff and you have a little kitchenette which is handy.

I'm off to Paris in May and staying with the same brand there.

The location is also excellent - you can easily walk most places but there's a tram stop virtually outside.
