Worried about our upcoming holiday.

I think we might have made a mistake. We've booked an all inclusive to Dominican Republic.

The long term weather forecast is saying rain most days and the reviews aren't great.

Can anyone reassure me that when it rains it doesn't rain all day? It's my first time in the Caribbean.

I’ve found out that with a tropical climate, they will usually show POSSIBILITY of rain - it may be a spatter, it may be a quick downpour, it may be nothing. You’ll see a lot more sun than rain. The resorts have a lot to offer, so I'm sure there's something to do if it does rain.

From our experience it is biblical rain but it doesn’t last long and soon is dry and sunny again not like here when it last hours and hours. We usually just stayed in the pool or hot tub

Remember that a weather app/website will always try to reduce a day's weather to a single symbol (the "least good sky" of the day), and the chance of rain will be reported as a single % chance of having any non-zero amount of rain in the 24-hour period. But in the Caribbean it's very common to have cloud appear and give you 15 minutes of intense rain — this can happen 4 or 5 times on a 1-week holiday. So the forecast will say "High chance of rain today", but that just means "Low chance of absolutely zero rain".

What month are you travelling?

We are there first week of Feb. I don't need wall to wall sunshine but all day rain would be disappointing.

I think you will be fine. From what I've read if it rains it's only a short burst
We are going for the first time in May. Hope you have a fabulous holiday

Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2025 13:32

I’ve been and it rained most days at some point but might be for 5 minutes or an hour but the rest of the time was glorious!

take some games/cards/books or something to do in case it lasts a while but the entertainment teams kept things going, and fortuitously the time I had rain all day for 1 day it was our first day and this was pre children, so we sat in the bar and tried all the cocktails on the menu to find our favourite and ate a lot! Didn’t rain the rest of the holiday

Also my tip is, go to buffets when they open. Food won’t have been sitting around so long, and use good hand hygiene to prevent a dodgy tummy

hby9628 · 29/01/2025 14:38

@Temporaryname158 did you have a good hol? I must admit I'm a bit nervous about getting a dodgy tummy. I should stop reading so many online reports!
Which resort did you stay at

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/01/2025 16:35

My son and his partner went there last May and the forecast for every day they were there showed a thundercloud symbol but in reality it was just a bit overcast and humid. The food at their hotel didn't look brilliant but they had a good time and enjoyed the trips.

Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2025 17:15

I had a wonderful time and went several times. I stayed in pints Cana but recall the exact hotel name.

take some dioralite just in case but hopefully you won’t need it, I didn’t x

ImANameChanger01 · 29/01/2025 17:17

It’ll be short bursts. You’ll be fine

Wonderfulstuff · 31/01/2025 10:28

It's short bursts and very welcome. I've been to Dom Rep beginning of March and it was lovely. Enjoy your holiday.
