Where to stay in Cairo and Luxor

I'm looking for lovely places to stay in Cairo and Luxor. As we will be collected by guides each morning, we are looking for somewhere fairly centrally located in both cities. It would be lovely to stay on the Nile and to be located fairly close to restaurants for the evening. Budget of around £250 per night for late September

We've stayed in the Movenpick Jolie Ville, Sonesta St George and the Hilton in Luxor. All three hotels were excellent in their own way. The Movenpick had extensive grounds and much of the accommodation was in chalets in the gardens when we were there (it was a while ago so may have changed now). The Sonesta was very comfortable and had several really good restaurants. It was also the most central of the three hotels. The Hilton was by far the best of the three. It was very quiet when we were there, and for a couple of days there were only two other guests. But they still put out the full buffet in the main restaurant. The food in all of the restaurants was amazing, and the pool area was among the best I've ever seen. The hotel was quite a way out of the town but was a reasonably easy walk to Karnak temple.

The Old Winter Palace is an amazing place to stay in Luxor. It's right on the River Nile, and the gardens are beautiful.

Thanks so much. I have booked the Hilton in Luxor as it does look wonderful. I'm looking for a hotel in Cairo that is not highly priced (like St Regis, Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton) but one that is slightly lower priced. The Kempinski and Sofitel both look good but I'm slightly worried that they are too far from places to go out to in the evening. Has anyone stayed at either?

I'm so pleased for you - and very envious! I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. I'm afraid we've never stayed in Cairo - we've just done very long day trips from Luxor, but I'm sure someone will come along with recommendations. I always fancied being able to look out at the pyramids from my hotel window.

We stayed at Mena House and had a fantastic view of the pyramids.

It is around £500 to stay at Mena House, so out of our budget. Looks incredible though
