Pompeii

I put this on holidays as i was on holiday there. But maybe it should go somewhere else.

Has anyone been to visit Pompeii in Italy?

I went last week and i actually felt really upset.

The guide brought us to see the brothel Thats still there and is still very well preserved.

On the walls you can still see paintings of sex acts. They said the punters would come in and point at a painting and ask for what they want.

I asked who were the prostitutes back then.

Our guide said they were slaves and they worked from morning until night, 7 days a week.

It just sickened me - the thought of rich men coming in, pointing at what they wanted on the wall, and had no regard at all for the women as human Beings.

The rich men had a great existence and those enslaved women had a really miserable existence. Our guide said that they often died from disease .

I felt really bad after I came out and so did the rest of my group. Why has society often been so wicked in history.

History?

It still happens today all over the world.

Yeah I was looking at the brothel in Pompeii and I was thinking, God the world hasn't developed much further since then..

Really recommend a book called Sparrow by James Hynes about an boy orphan growing up in a brothel in the dying days of the Roman Empire. It's fascinating and grim in equal measure.

This trilogy brings it to life without sugaring or glamorising Roman life. I read it before visiting Pompeii, and the detailed descriptions of the city, and of the brothel meant that I barely needed to look at the guide book
