What have we missed out in Rome?

Currently in Rome (having a fab time I might add!). We have one more full day before coming home on Friday and have checked off our planned itinerary sooner than planned. We've done the Vatican, the Pantheon, the Colosseum and Forum, the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and numerous churches (annoyingly I haven't been keeping track...). We're staying in the Trastevere and have had pizza, pasta, tiramisu, gelato and plenty of espresso, wine and Aperol spritz. We both love art, history, food and wine. What have I missed out? Preferably something we can do tomorrow without needing to have booked weeks in advance Grin.

Day trip to Pompei and Naples Museum. Awesome.

unsync · 15/01/2025 16:26

Villa d'Este in Tivoli - you can get the train. Or the catacombs. Or the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna.

Watching with excitement and anticipation!

Was going to go this year, but have decided to go around this time next year instead, since the Jubilee is on and accommodation and the sights will be both expensive and jammed for months.

@Questionz How are you finding it with the Jubilee on. Probably hasn't reached full tilt yet!

Not in Rome, but a short journey away by train, Ostia Antica is worth a trip IMO

This would be my choice. It's dubbed "the second Pompeii" as it is so well preserved. It takes about an hour and a half on the train. The medieval town of Ostia Antica is within walking distance of the ruins and is also well worth a visit. I'd highly recommend Ristorante Monumento for lunch whilst you're there.

Hi, did you do this yourselves or with a tour?

We used a tour company. It was so easy and not overpriced

I agree with the recommendation for the Capitoline Museum, or the Borghese Gardens. Also if the Domus Aurea is open try and see that.

ThePoshUns · 15/01/2025 16:36

You could take a train to Tivoli and visit the villa d'este, it has gorgeous gardens and fountains.

Or the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, Trajan’s Market (opposite the Roman Forum)

AdaColeman · 15/01/2025 16:39

The Palazzo Massimo museum.

They have the amazing frescoes from the Empress Livia's country villa, which was probably given to her as a gift from Augustus.
The frescoes are of a wilderness garden filled with birds, which decorated her dining room. They are displayed in a specially created room the exact dimensions of their original room, so you see them just as Livia and Augustus must have seen them.
Not to be missed!

Looking at this thread, it seems you need at least another week in glorious Rome!

@Halavonna we did a day trip to Pompeii by train by ourselves. You can book train tickets via the Trainline. Have a look at the price of first class - it was cheaper than standard when we booked. Check with Pompeii station you want - it's one is a shorter walk, but not a problem if you get it wrong.

sandgrown · 15/01/2025 16:44

The Boca di Veritas for a bit of fun .

Skandar · 15/01/2025 16:48

One of my favourite things that we did last time we went to Rome was to go to Frascatti - it was a fairly short train ride, and we just mooched around the town (city?), had lunch (with a nice jug of Frascati of course!) and got the train back - loved it.

The Capuchin Monk Museum
The Capitoline Museum - oldest in the world

Cycling along the Via Appia Antica is amazing. There’s a bike hire shop near where it starts.

Visiting the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) from Rome, how?

I lived in Rome as a child and love going back.

The Cappucin crypt is amazing, I still love visiting it. Also walking through the old Jewish quarter and getting food from Pasticceria Boccione if it is still there. And going up the Wedding cake building - Victor Emmanuel II Monument, which has an amazing view of the city.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 15/01/2025 16:59

St Clemente - it is built above a mithraic temple you can also go down to.

The church with the Capucin crypt beneath it ( all made of skulls)

The catacombs on the Appian Way

Church of St Cecilia in Trastevere

Someone else has already mentioned it but a trip to Ostia Antica on the train is definitely worth it. It's very well preserved and quite a lot of the buildings are still two storeys high so you really get a feel of what it would be like to wander through Roman streets. I seem to remember the mosaics were very impressive too.

Phineyj · 15/01/2025 17:17

I really enjoyed the Baths of Caracalla. Very atmospheric.

buy a hot priest calendar

Ha ha got one for my daughter!

Borghese Gallery if you want more culture. Otherwise, shopping and pottering. If you’ve had a hectic trip, sitting in a nice bar/restaurant pretending you’re local is very underrated!

crackofdoom · 15/01/2025 19:10

I noticed lots of cool looking bars on the edge of the Circo Massimo when I was there, with lots of Italians having a lovely time and spilling over onto the grass in the Circo in the evening sun. I was with the kids :(

Maraudingmarauders · 15/01/2025 19:14

A stomp around Monti! Get away from the main stuff now you’ve been and just enjoy the vibrant neighbourhoods

CalicoQuince · 15/01/2025 19:34

I loved the underground part of this church https://www.basilicasanclemente.com/eng/

and the best thing of all was a food tour we took with Eating Europe (Val was our guide). One of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a holiday!

An e-bike tour to the catacombs - did it in the summer. It was brilliant!
