Zanzibar - any opinions?

We are considering a trip to Zanzibar for a diving/beach holiday. We might also add on a week safari somewhere in Tanzania. Anyone done something similar? Felt safe? Hotel recommendations? Package?

We've been and enjoyed it. We did 3 nights on safari and a week in Zanzibar. Note the safari is the expensive bit so you wouldn't just be "adding on" a safari (especially for a week - you would probably want to do 2 locations for that long on safari). It was over 10 years ago that we went (pre-kids!) so hopefully someone who has been more recently can give you a better idea re prices etc!

We have 3 kids so actually 3 night safari would probably be fine then a week Zanzibar. DH quite keen to dive.

3 night safari would make it all a bit frantic to see anything. Tanzania is much more 'wild' and frankly it was the best part. We did 10 nights and the variety made it worthwhile. The Ngorongoro crater would be silly to miss and would take 2 nights.

Zanzibar is lovely, Stonetown is certainly worth a visit too, as is the coast. There is lots to do, but we used it as the RnR after safari rather than the reverse. We stayed at Kisiwa on the Beach and it was very relaxed.
