South coast UK February?

I love a coastal holiday in winter - we often go to Cornwall but fancy somewhere different this year. Will have dog and two teens. I’ve been looking at Kent (never been - is Broadstairs nice?) or West Wittering? Any suggestions? We want to be able to walk to a beach easily for walks and if it’s in a town/village, for it to be a nice town, even a bit fancy with nice pubs/delis etc.
I’d love some places to investigate!

West Wittering is beautiful and some lovely walks around the Spit (National Trust land). If you want wintry dramatic in Kent then I’d suggest looking at Dungeness.

Lyme Regis, Swanage, Rye and Whitstable would all be good options.

Thank you both! Intrigued by Dungeness! We know and love Lyme Regis and Swanage - definitely the vibe we’re after. Will look up your other suggestions. Thanks 🙏🏼

Broadstairs is lovely. Even in February it will be worth going to Morelli's ice cream parlour. The place sells lovely ice cream.

I absolutely love rye. Granted it's not on a beach but camber is very close. Lots of beautiful little cafes/ restaurants/ boutiques. Brunch at the fig, dinner at the George hotel. Potter around the little flea markets by the harbour.
Dungeness nearby for a walk.
If you like animals, port lympne also is a great day out and within easy driving distance.

I live near Eastbourne, quaint but has a bit to do. Drusillas zoo, great for kids, Brighton lots of good shops and cafés. Lewes interesting, good cinema, cafés, plenty of downland walks. Vineyards to explore. Train trips make it easy to visit area.

StormingNorman · 13/01/2025 15:22

Broadstairs is lovely. Lots of good country pubs too and not far from Margate, Deal and Canterbury.

Georgyporky · 13/01/2025 18:14

We're about to explore Hastings, looks interesting..

Isle of Wight, beach walks galore, look at photos of the Military Road to see what I mean .., and the walk over Tennyson Down to the Needles.. Stay near Yarmouth, Cowes , Ventnor or Ryde for nice places to eat .. But
Not Sandown or Shanklin unless you like old fashioned seaside towns !

Laska2Meryls · 13/01/2025 18:29

Or New Forest, Lymington, Brockenhurst areas

Has the isle of wight perked up? I went there about 20 years ago and it was like stepping back in time (and not in a good way). Bad service/food/shabby.

Mollspolls · 14/01/2025 14:45

Thanks all! We have booked a lovely place near Rye. I realise that’s not on the coast but it’s not far and I was wooed by the cottage… Thanks again for your suggestions! @coralsky you win!

good choice. like rye and also camber and dungeness. you can also go inland to kent if you get bored...pretty villages, vineyards and bodium castle

StormingNorman · 14/01/2025 18:37

Rye is beautiful! Make sure you have a drink in The Mermaid. Lots of beautiful antique shops too.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 14/01/2025 21:56

The Waterworks Micropub in Rye is a must @Mollspolls

Mollspolls · 15/01/2025 07:07

Thank you for the recommendations! We’ll have our dog with us so anywhere good to eat/ drink with a dog around Rye and Camber Sands would be great to know!

Battle Abbey
Bodiam castle
Kent and East Sussex railway
Kikos cat cafe in Rye - we have been and it seem quite ethical, another room cats could access, no picking up, loads of high shelves and pathways for them.
Rye Harbour nature reserve for a walk
Hastings - couple of quirky little museums and the old town is nice for a wander.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 15/01/2025 07:40

Haha just saw the dog thing...maybe not a cat cafe then 😂
