Quick question about hotel reservation with one card and paying with another afterwards

I need to reserve accommodation for my trip to the US pretty sharpish, but when I get there, I hope to check in with the original card, but pay the balance with either Monzo or Revolut.

Is this possible? Thanks/

Oh be careful with this. In theory you can depending on T&Cs, but 2 US hotels I've been in recently have had it look like I'll pay on checkout, and then charged me the full amount on check-in because I'm an International Visitor 😬

I would contact the hotel in question beforehand and get a written email confirmation that either Monzo or Revolut is acceptable to them.

Can you not just use the Monzo or Revolut account to settle your credit card bill after the event?

Thanks, that is what I am asking. I don't actually have a Monzo card yet, but will get one for the purpose of making transactions abroad. It's just that I need to book soon as places are going, but I only have my regular credit card.

I have emailed them, so hopefully, they will reply soon!

Why not just reserve on Monzo / Revolut? You can open an account immediately I think?
Do consider the credit card protection (which I don't think Monzo / Revolut have).

For that I use a Halifax Clarity card for international travel. But I always clear the card at the end of the month because the APR is a shocker.

No, I meant you pay the hotel by credit card, then when your credit card bill comes in after you get home from your trip you pay it out of your Monzo/Revolut account.

But it sounds like you want to pay in the US directly by Monzo to get a better exchange rate?

Thanks rollercoaster. Would I be able to use the account immediately even if I didn't have a physical card?

Yes, that's right.

I think I got a virtual Monzo card immediately that could download to my wallet, so you'll probably be able to reserve directly on that

xsquared · 07/01/2025 18:17

Thanks @LateMumma I shall give that a try!

Monzo is a proper bank and the cards are Mastercard so fully protected.
The only place I haven't been able to use it was on a TUI flight to Mexico, they couldn't explain why.

BerryBat · 07/01/2025 19:04

@xsquared You can get your bank details in the Monzo app if you don't have the physical card Smile
