A cheap Greek holiday

Can anyone please suggest a Greek location for our first holiday in a few years

  • extremely cheap
  • on the beach
  • no hire car
  • low stress so easy ish to get to

We have two young kids - and I want them to experience travel and have a nice time but budget is tight. Last trip I went on that I’m thinking of was in Evia off coast of Athens in a tiny town staying in a taverna £20 a night with breakfast, on the water. But unfortunately it’s not appropriate for their age, there was no sand just jumping off jetties etc. and it was on a main road so not safe.

Hoping to go for 2 weeks. Thinking if I can get the accommodation cost down then I can spend money on food - my kids eat non stop so would need to include breakfast or have very cheap local tavernas as shopping and cooking won’t be a holiday for me ( and no car).

Thinking May/June/July.

thanks everyone!

Try Katelios, on Kefalonia. It's a small resort, mainly just bars and restaurants along the beach. Quiet, but good for families. Accommodation ranges from villas with pools to apart hotels. It's a lovely place. Easyjet holidays have plenty of options there, with good prices.

... or Kefalonia generally.

Unfortunately Greece and very cheap are no longer synon. The cheapest way to do it is flying into Athens then get a ferry to one of the less visited islands as they tend to be cheaper. Or as an alternative Tolo on the Pelopponese. You can get a a long distance coach to Nafplio and change on to a local bus. The journey is well worth it.

It has a fabulous beach, good tavernas and it's a fab base for touring. If you can get on it the trip to Monomvasia by boat is unbeatable. We had lunch at a small taverna just below the town which only did chicken and chips but it was by far the best h chicken and chips I've ever had

Thank you so much! Really appreciate it!

Greece isn't cheap any more...

Kitkat1523 · 06/01/2025 19:26

Greece isn’t cheap now….you need to look at another country if you want cheap

DorothyStorm · 06/01/2025 19:31

@biwi Kefalonia is not £20 a night cheap, but if you have a link i would love it. My dd loves greece.

bulgaria is the cheapest family holiday we have done.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 06/01/2025 20:13

Corfu, Crete and sometimes Rhodes tend to come out the cheapest. Kefalonia is lovely but tends to be considerably more expensive for flights (accommodation and food are similar).

what is your budget?

on the beach and loveholidays both have very reasonably priced packages. This year we’ve gone first week of September and have paid £2500 for AI for 3 adults and 1 older teen. So pretty much 4 adults in 2 rooms. We usually go B&B but thought the price was pretty good and it is nice to be able to just get a drink without costs mounting up. We will still eat out most days and hire a car to explore.

with younger kids in one room you could pay a lot less. I don’t think we ever paid more than £1500 for a week b&b in the summer hols when the kids were younger. If budget is very tight the kavos region of Corfu has some very cheap prices. It’s not the most picturesque place on the island but very budget friendly.

Have a look at Roda in Corfu. Lovely safe sandy beach, plenty of lovely bars and restaurants which are very budget friendly!! I used to fill my son up on gyros or souvlaki pitta at €2 a go!! Now about €3 but it's very filling - meat, chips, salad and tzatziki inna rollled up flat bread.
There are so really cheap flights around - it was £40 each way with Ryanair for July from Teeside when I checked yesterday. A taxi is about €65 from the airport or book Hoppa transfers. Local bus goes to some great places and easy to get into nearby Acharavi/Sidari/Kassiopi as well as town.
I've done it for years as a single mum on a budget and it's amazing value for families. Some
Beach sunbeds are still free or free if you spend €15 on food/drink so so much cheaper than other islands DS where they charge you a fortune to hire them. There are loads of budget friendly places to stay and don't worry if the place you choose doesn't have a pool as you can use any pool as long as you buy something. So stay somewhere cheaper and buy a drink to use pool or pay a wee but more for accommodation and get the pool free. Good value places to stay are Valentinos, Roda Pearl, Makis which have pools. Villa Eleni and Maras Rentaroom which don't.

Can you be a bit more specific on budget?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/01/2025 06:08

Go for 10 days to reduce your costs. Still a good amount of time to relax and enjoy a holiday.

ItsFineImFine · 07/01/2025 07:15

Thank you so much everyone this just warms my heart.

I forgot about gyros as a filling food option ( was thinking I would have to do sit down meals all the time!) @jocktamsonsbairn and this will save a mini fortune if I can do that every few days. And I love all your pool tips too.

Going for 10 days also a great trick thank you! @NigelHarmansNewWife

All these look great I’ve opened them all up on my browser and am determined now to do it this year!

Thanks again Mumsnetters!

@Ohhelpicantthinkofaname this sounds great I will look these up! £40 flights!!!! This is exactly what I was hoping for but imagined it would be far more expensive and your hotel recommendations are now open on my browser. Thank you SO much
