Baby’s first passport - documents

Babyenroutee · 03/01/2025 14:26

What documents are required when applying for our newborns first passport?

Do you need both parents birth certificates, as well as their passports or will our passport suffice?

Thanks!

Child's long birth certificate and parents' passport numbers and a photo of the child. If applying online have the email address for the person you are using to verify the identity.

mummylove24 · 03/01/2025 14:35

Yes, baby’s birth certificate, mother and father’s too. Then someone to confirm your identity because it’s a baby, it will be your identity they confirm. This is where I got stuck, it has to be British and professional job like nurse, dentist, judge, teacher etc.. not a family member, and it’s all done online, it can’t be a manager at work either. I feel it’s discriminatory against your friends who can confirm they know you but can’t just because they’re not “professionals”

dementedpixie · 03/01/2025 14:37

They don't need the birth certificates of the parents; the passport numbers will be sufficient.
@mummylove24 it can be a manager at work, don't know why you think it can't be

It’s also birth certificates to prove the child is British through their parent(s) or certificate of naturalisation or indefinite leave to remain

Teenagerantruns · 03/01/2025 14:40

You definaltly don't need your birth certificates if you have a UK passport. Just the passport number.

This is all from experience @dementedpixie just a few months ago x

Topseyt123 · 03/01/2025 14:44

We've used managers at work.

No you don't if the passport numbers have been given as that shows the parents have British citizenship that they can pass on

dementedpixie · 03/01/2025 14:50

This is the relevant bit from the passport info. If you have given British passport numbers you don't need the extra birth certificates

We just needed our daughters adoption certificate which is equivalent to a long birth certificate, our passport numbers, pictures of our daughter and the details of the person confirming identity.

@dementedpixie curious, have you applied for baby’s first passport recently? This is August last year I experienced all this.

dementedpixie · 03/01/2025 14:59

It depends who deals with your application sometimes. I have seen threads on here where some people are asked for info that isn't required and when they query it they only need the info that I've said the need to provide.

@mummylove24 I have shown a screenshot from the guidance leaflet and it says other birth certificates aren't required if the passport numbers are given.

mummylove24 · 03/01/2025 15:02

They really had me jumping through hoops, it was so annoying, something didn’t seem right even when I tried to query it, a parent(s) British passport should have been enough, like you said @dementedpixie its down to the person processing it I guess

ThatOpenSwan · 03/01/2025 15:07

I did it online three weeks ago and had to send her birth certificate and my birth certificate in, having already given my passport number.

Yes same here, it seems it’s different for different applications or whoever’s checking/processing it x

Ihatewinding · 03/01/2025 15:23

Neither of us (parents) were born in the UK but have UK passports so we had to send extra stuff, think maybe my birth certificate as well. It gets a bit more complicated if your right to be British has extra steps (I was born abroad to British parents and my EU partner got UK citizenship as an adult) so UK passport numbers don't always cut it

Should add I'm born in the UK to British citizen parents, so sending in my birth certificate wasn't related to that.

Keydaff4 · 03/01/2025 22:16

I’ve just applied and I needed to send his birth certificate and my birth certificate. Along with supplying my own passport number, his photo and an email of someone who can verify his identity. My friend did it for me, there wasn’t a problem there.

I have applied today and they have also asked for my birth certificate as well as my daughters. I have had to order one (priority). So will send it along with theirs once received. Was this sufficient enough or did they want more? I’m tempting to just put my marriage certificate in and my mother’s birth certificate in to cover ourselves. Can I also ask how long it took for the passport to come?

They definitely didn't want anything else, and can't remember how long it took but not long enough for me to be stressed about how long it was taking, if you see what I mean!
