Internal US flights

Any tips on getting cheap internal US flights?
Is it more reliable to book through an agent, online aggregators, or just ruck-up at the airport 10min before you want to fly, like they do in the movies?

I've always found google flights finds pretty decent internal international flights - it will tell you when people normally book/when it might be cheaper too.
