JFK

jfk, hard to get to newark imo.

newark's a little further away but flights are sometimes cheaper there.

I'd always go for a smaller airport, but it depends where you are going afterwards. We flew into Newark a few weeks ago with no problems. dh hates JFK (security and immigration queues are often very long) but flew in there a month or so ago very smoothly.

Would check airfares for both places before booking.

JFK is an awful airport with air traffic control issues causing delays. Newark would therefore get my vote.

Oh and don't go to LaGuardia. It has a terrible reputation.

also could anyone tell me the transfer time from JFK and newark to central NY? we are staying at the wellington and was going to pre book tranfers...

It would be a bit quicker getting into Manhattan from Newark than JFK.

La Guardia is mainly used for US internal flights so your choices are JFK or Newark.

Either are fine, really. JFK maybe slightly quicker going into the city - not necessarily true on the way back out because of traffic. Newark rally isn't that much further out. I'd go for which ever flights are cheaper (I've pften flown into one airport and out of the other).

You can get Port Authority buses from JFk into Manhattan, but I have always gone for a yellow taxi, which I think is $40 flat rate + toll ($5)? takes about 40-1 hr mins into midtown Manhattan depending on traffic. Allow longer on the way back, especially if you are travelling in rush hour.

I always try to fly to Newark if possible, as immigration tends to be far less busy than at JFK.
