Solo travel where would you go?

I'm really hoping to go away for a week or two this year. I'm just not sure where to go. I'll be (hopefully) just divorced. I haven't been away since before lockdown. I'm after an adventure. I was carjacked many years ago, so a bit nervous, but my life has been miserable for years and i'm yearning for a life.
I have a friend who left her husband and kids at home last New Year and went to south africa on safari but that feels a bit too brave for me.
I'm used to 5 star all inc with my ex, but i'm worried that sort of thing i'd be surrounded by couples or families - and I don't want a holiday to highlight how miserable my life is.

Any suggestions where might be a good place for me to go and whether anyone has any experience of guided tours? (i'm 51, childless for reference).

Athens
Rome
Florence
Barcelona

You dont need a guided tour. I travel on my own and stay in AirBnbs or small hotels.

There's a company called Solos that I used, I had a great week in Tuscany.

Businessflake · 30/12/2024 16:54

The Bodyholiday in St Lucia. Lots of people go solo.

Snowmanscarf · 30/12/2024 16:55

Go on a cruise?

NotPossibleToSay · 30/12/2024 16:57

Do something completely different that your ex would have hated, now that you don't have to please anyone else. What kinds of things do you enjoy?

PauliesWalnuts · 30/12/2024 16:59

I’ve done lots with Exodus and Explore. The Greek Caiquie week with Explore is great for solo women - that was my first one.

Do you like yoga? If yes, perhaps a yoga retreat. I thought Indonesia was great for solo travel.

Itsmitneymitch · 30/12/2024 17:00

Group tour with weroad

My friend in similar circumstances to you has got hooked on holidays with this company. She’s been all over the world.

Thank you - I will take a look. Where has she been?

I'm sure once i've done it once i'll be brave enough to do that, but I feel like i'd be a bit nervous for my first time alone.

Where hasn’t she! I know she’s done California, South Africa and Jordan.

If you want a sightseeing type trip I would book a group tour, there are lots of companies out there including the likes of Explore and Exodus. These are not super luxurious holidays though. Usually offer a mixed itinerary with sightseeing and other things. To be honest visiting cities on your own is easy, back in the days of solo travel I loved being able to do exactly what I wanted all day, no compromises, and I used to take a good book to read every time I sat down to eat, to avoid feeling self conscious. It does though take a degree of confidence to take the plunge, if you go solo pick somewhere very developed where it will all be as straightforward as possible.

This year I have been away three times with my 13yr old son. We have had an amazing time making some incredible memories (which was the reason for our trips). But I know that there will be a time when I’m going to have to put my big girl pants on and go it alone!

Our last trip was to Malta and we had a great time. But one thing that struck me was how comfortable I would feel going there on my own. So many things to see and do and it felt safe too.

Maybe give Malta a look? 😁.

Whatever you decide, I really hope you have an amazing time!

That looks lovely but it's very expensive.

Do you know, I actually don't know. I feel i've really lost all the excitement in my life, I don't seem to enjoy anything anymore (I know I sound real fun don't I)

I went to New York on my own and it was brilliant. Felt totally fine eating out alone etc and it felt safe to be there as a single woman.

Itsaswelltime · 30/12/2024 17:13

Do you like skiing or an activity like paddleboarding, canoeing, surfing, yoga?

There’s a travel agent specifically for solo cruise travel and land holidays - passion for cruises. They have a website and Facebook group.

I can thoroughly recommend cruises as a solo traveller - had my first in sept 22 and just back from my seventh!!

Itsmitneymitch · 30/12/2024 17:18

I would go to Italy!
