Did anyone else's teen at 18 have a year off to travel? DD is not sure about uni. She is saving to travel. I think the first part of the plan is to interail around Europe so not far away while they find their feet (prob with a friend). Did your 18 do this? They will camp or use cheap accommodation, what ball part figure would you say it would be for about two months?! She has been on the interail planner but tricky to actually work out how much money they will need for food and accommodation. Any info gratefully recieved!

Mine didn't take a year off but did inter-rail (with a friend) for about 8 weeks. I bought him the first class pass as a treat (and it didn't cost much more) and he was very thankful of it because first class in Europe allowed you to book seats etc - first class wasn't always that swanky though.

He stayed in hostels and a few times in Italy in little 2 star b&bs through booking.com. It wasn't that costly - most nights were about £20-35. A lot of the hostels were very good quality and there is an app with them all on.

German trains caused the biggest headaches with lots of cancellations/changes. One night they had paid for a sleeper cabin from Berlin to Venice I think. Anyway, it was cancelled with no warning and they were taken off and put on a bus - but it literally dropped them off in a town square in the middle of the night in Austria!! They finally found their way with no sleep and no help from the train company arriving in Venice at 5am. As an aside it took ages to get a refund for the sleeper - 6 months of emails.

By week 5 they needed a break (and came to visit us in a holiday villa) before heading off again. They had a great time though.
