Do you think business class is worth £500 each for a day flight?

It’s a British Airways old club world route from Gatwick. Around 10hrs.

We already have lounge access and can use fast track baggage drop off (through airline status).

We won’t need the extra baggage. We aren’t rich either so £500 is quite a lot of money. The £500 figure is actually about £300 cash and £200 worth of avios.

It depends. You didn't say where to, the time zone can make a difference to whether you really want a decent kip during the flight or not. And it depends on your size and fitness, how well you tolerate air travel. I'm small so I've got enough legroom and a bit of wiggle space in economy.

harriethoyle · 28/12/2024 07:53

For 10 hours, absolutely…

MaggieBsBoat · 28/12/2024 07:55

For a ten hour flight I would definitely consider it if you can afford it. It makes a massive difference on how ok you feel on arrival.

RNBrie · 28/12/2024 07:56

For a day flight I wouldn't bother. I've upgraded for day flights and felt it was wasted on me. For a night flight, I wouldn't hesitate.

BA isn’t great for business, as its a day flight what are prices like for premium economy?

Cottonheadedninhymuggins · 28/12/2024 08:06

I think it depends really. We were upgraded to Vegas. Old plane, issues with the IFE etc. the whole thing was just a bit tatty. Looking back, it would have cost a lot but for a freebie, it was welcome. We’d have been fine in our extra leg room seats. We paid to fly business to Singapore. That was on a different level. Absolutely fabulous experience. New plane and worth every penny.

All in, it depends where you are going.

Whatisittomorrow · 28/12/2024 08:16

For only £300 cash each, I’d upgrade.

Side question, but how do you know if you are getting and old/new plane?

Also old plane. still might have the news club world as they are all getting upgraded.

i was disappointed when I upgraded on avios but got old club world. If there’s a way to find out-that’s great.

Mirrorxxx · 28/12/2024 08:17

It’s a good upgrade price but as pp said old club world isn’t great

Overthebow · 28/12/2024 08:18

Depends how much £500 is worth to you, I wouldn’t get into debt for it for if you can comfortably afford it then I’d go for it for a 10 hour flight.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 28/12/2024 08:19

Depends on your income really. We aren't well off so I'd rather spend the grand on the holiday/another holiday.

But if you've got money to burn I'd do it as it will make the trip more pleasant.

foyc · 28/12/2024 08:25

The fact it's a 10 hour flight, and actually only £300 cash, yes absolutely. Shame it's Gatwick and presumably the old club configuration though.

makemineadecaf · 28/12/2024 08:25

Just go for BA premium economy.

Moonlightstars · 28/12/2024 08:27

Personally I wouldn't. I would use it for another holiday

backinthebox · 28/12/2024 08:32

It depends entirely on your own personal preference. Much of the time for me the issue on a daylight Gatwick flight is not the age of the aircraft but the other passengers, many of whom treat the rear galley like the kitchen at a student party. The aim seems to be to spend as much of the flight as possible standing up and drinking the bar dry. ‘Only’ £600 cash is a great deal for an upgrade on a 10hr flight, but then again I can think of a lot of other things I could spend £600 on too. It’s up
to you. If you have the cash lying around, can’t stand other people, and want to start your holiday refreshed and ready to go, then go for it. If you just view the flight as a necessary evil and have other stuff you want to spend it on, pack a good neck cushion, ear plugs and eyeshade, and try and block it all out.

FlagrantCat · 28/12/2024 08:34

BA business is a bit shite, tbh, compared to other airlines. It isn’t worth it. Premium economy would be a better choice for the money.

burnoutbabe · 28/12/2024 08:36

£500 extra over already paid? Probably not if it's a struggle.

I did upgrade to premium economy on 17 hours back from Japan via Hong Kong. That was £300 per person extra. Worth it for such a long flight and i don't fly well.

Wanting a seat in aisle of 2 was top priority and wanting extra leg room. I'd may have been able to get that via £150 book own sears in economy though.

Their latest planes have had some good upgrades

MoreHappy · 28/12/2024 08:42

and extra £500 for a 10hr flight upgraded to business class - absolutely grab them before they go! People are saying BA business is shite but I have not experienced that - I have noticed a great variation in quality of seating depending on plane / route etc.

MoreHappy · 28/12/2024 08:42

find out the plane type model etc and google it to compare business class to your other option

notimagain · 28/12/2024 09:08

@Whatisittomorrow

Side question, but how do you know if you are getting and old/new plane

There are websites that will give you a very strong indication of what you will probably get but ultimately you have absolutely no way of knowing for certain until the day, and that applies to any route (and any airline for that matter).

RosesAndHellebores · 28/12/2024 09:20

I think it's worth it personally.
