Iceland - extra day in the Reykjanes peninsula?

We (me, DH and DC aged 15 and 12) are visiting Iceland for a week this coming August. EasyJet have brought our outgoings flight forward by a day, which means we're there for a extra day and night. I'd really like to spend the extra day in the Reykjanes peninsula looking for lava and mud pools. Does anyone have any experience or tips? We'll have our own hire car and we're staying by the Blue Lagoon for a couple of nights.

It's a good idea, Reykjanes is a great day out. I'd take the old hike to the lava fields from 2021 - it's a lot of fun to see and the path is good. It takes about 3 hours of hiking, about 90 minutes one way. And stop at Krýsuvík and Kleifarvatn on the drive there.

That sounds great. Is the path easy to find? Where does it start?

Yes, very easy to find. It was insanely popular when the eruptions were ongoing so it is well signposted. I think the start is marked on Google maps as Fagradalsfjall volcano hike private tour - but the path is not private at all. Anyone can go there.

Brilliant, thankyou!
