Have my on a rather secluded hotel which isn't cheap, but even so.....

The problem with Venice in summer is that the canals can start smelling really foul - however secluded your hotel, it's difficult to escape the pong...

hmm...maybe we could defer till Autumn half term. Have only been in Spring before.

Second the smell... also it will be hot. Not sure if you have DCs in tow, but busy, hot, smelly summer Venice is prob best avoided if you have.

It wasn't impossible in high summer. It was boiling hot, but not everywhere was crowded.

I'd go in autumn / winter personally. It's less crowded and smelly.
