I’ve been to Nidri twice. Beach isn’t up to much but a lot of the hotels have pools. It’s quite a laid back place with bars and restaurants along the harbour. I’d definitely go back (I’m 50+)

I stayed here

I’ve been to Nidri as well. Beach not great but ok.
It’s easy access from the airport and a busy little place.

I think there are far prettier places but nothing wrong with it.

mrsnjw · 17/12/2024 16:40

Looked to go here but appears very quiet. We have decided on kefalonia instead.

BotterMon · 17/12/2024 16:51

Vasiliki is imo the best place to stay on Lefkada. Beach fine and water lovely. Quite a few nice restaurants on the beach and in the town plus easy access to Rachi - lovely restaurant with spectacular views at sunset.

Having been to both I’d say Nidri is livelier than anywhere is Kefalonia.

We were in Nidri in June. Stayed at The Bel Air. Lefkas itself is a very pretty island and maybe less commercialised than some islands. We had a good holiday.

But we've been to lots of Greek resorts and we wouldn't rush back. It's deffo got an older couple vibe and the restaurants etc are good. But the beach is narrow and very crowded and there's nothing charming about the town which is featureless and modern. Hotel was basic and not that great for the price

Places we have loved. Skiathos which is probably our fave island. Kefalonia especially Fiskado, Parga on the mainland, elounda on Crete and Paros which is stunning.

mrsnjw · 17/12/2024 17:03

@TwistedWonder ohh good to know. Will keep in. Ind for 2026.

I went to Skiathos Town last year and loved it. Think that would be the first place I’d recommend for couples/friends 40+

Went to Parga 10 years ago for a family holiday when my son was 10 and always thought I’d go back again.

MumVUnicorns · 17/12/2024 17:23

I went about 25 years ago - so I can't say what it is like now, but the beach wasn't great. Most hotels had pools, where most people tended to stay. The promenade had an array of restaurants and bar/cafes. There were also a small amount of shops too.

I loved the ability to hop on a boat and explore other islands for the day or hire a car to explore the island/mainland - in hindsight I was bored after a few days (but, I'm not one for sunbathing!).

Gman1 · 17/12/2024 19:27

Cheers all,i love a good beach and not really fussed about hotel pools, so prehaps Lefkada not for me.

Like the look of Fiskado and Parga and interested about Skiathos visted Paros ,Naxos and Santorini over 40yrs ago and loved them back then but only travelling for a week this time so dont want hassle of ferries or transfer flights.
Any feed back on above very welcome.

I agree that skiathos is a fantastic island to visit. We went over to skolops on the ferry as it where they filmed Mama Mia. Had a fab time. Beautiful beaches and a very cosmopolitan old town based around a harbour.

Santorini has an airport now so much easier to get to. I went last year and stayed in Kamari.

mrsnjw · 17/12/2024 19:33

Santorini isn't great for beaches though. Parissa has the only beach and it's black volcanic sand.

We got the ferry over to Skopelos for the day and loved it. We walked up what seemed like a million steps past that little church at end of harbour and found a lovely bar where they spoke very little English and only served beer, orange or Diet Coke - views were amazing.

Really loved the evenings in Skiathos Town. I’d definitely go back

Kamari had a beach but it’s not the best. And the planes come a few feet over your head

mrsnjw · 17/12/2024 19:36

We have never visited the same place twice as there's so much of the world to see. Skiathos is the only place we have said we would come back here. Buses are good fun.

annlee3817 · 17/12/2024 19:39

We were in Lefkada in September, we didn't manage to find a sandy beach, but then we had a 2 year old and a didn't venture much further than Nydri, from research though there were a lot of beaches that were recommended on the south of the island, the ones we found were all stony which was frustrating with little ones. We did go to the Marabou beach bar in Nydri, good was lovely, and we rented their sun lounges for the day and were able to then swim in the sea there

Gman1 · 17/12/2024 19:50

Liking sound of Skaithos ,like good beach, choice if restaurants and bars and have good access to rest of island so we can visit by car or bus.
Any reccomendtions on appartmets .

We stayed at skiathos premier. Bus stop opposite hotel that takes you in a line across the island

mrsnjw · 17/12/2024 19:59

We went to Corfu this year. That too had fab beaches

TwistedWonder · 17/12/2024 20:03

We stayed at Blue Horizon which is a lovely little place however it’s quite high up over the town and the walk back of a night is a jig of a killer

WaitingRoomBoredom · 17/12/2024 20:12

Vasiiliki is a lovely place stay and some fabulous sandy beaches on the west coast as well as Amoussa which is v. nearby

We rarely return but we have been back several times to Skiathos. It's a stunning island. Very green and lush although it does get more rain. We had a holiday in September cancelled due to floods a couple of years back. It's also a little more expensive and it is heaving in high season.

But it's still magical with luscious beaches, cosmopolitan night life and really good buses that serve all the island. We stay in La Piscine in town. Great adult only hotel.

Fiddie · 18/12/2024 08:15

Thassos! It's a ferry ride but a lovely one and less than an hour. Golden beach is one of my favourites and I've been to loads of the Greek islands. If you book with TUI ferry is included and couldn't be easier.

Kefalonia is much prettier than Lefkas but agree it's very quiet.

Parga is lovely too but avoid start or end of season as it starts closing and is a bit rainy.

Meant to say highly recommend Alexandra golden boutique hotel adults only (not Alexandra beach that's a different one) in Thassos, it's a la carte so you'll get private taxis from airport to port then port to hotel. We left Birmingham at 6 and were on the beach having lunch at 1.
