Name a classic American diner chain

Wanting to go out for breakfast in Durham, North Carolina and looking for a standard diner chain for an American experience. Airbnb hosts recommend loads of very cool artisanal places but we want something classic, maybe a little tacky but edible!!!

Any suggestions?

Denny’s? Is that still a thing?!

ChorltonCreamery · 03/12/2024 12:27

Wendy’s or my favourite The Cheesecake Factory.

IHOP was always my fave growing up because they had different flavoured syrups.

Janefx40 · 03/12/2024 12:29

Thanks all!! You are so speedy! Off to IHop as there is one nearby x

Ask someone for a local recommendation! The chains are mid at best.

DazedAndConfused321 · 03/12/2024 12:47

Elmo's is great in Durham if you want to experience a non-chain diner! The French toast with apples is calling my name

darkdays2024 · 03/12/2024 12:48

Try First Watch. Fabulous for breakfast!

Ygfrhj · 03/12/2024 13:04

A local diner would give you a more classic experience than an iHop or Denny's, those feel more like a fast food place to me?

Ask your host if there's a cheap mom n pop place rather than artisanal ones.

Cracker Barrel can't be beat for artery-clogging food at its finest. Just wheel a defibrillator right on up to the table and enjoy!😂

AttilaTheMeerkat · 03/12/2024 13:06

elmos diner
true flavors diner

mitogoshigg · 03/12/2024 13:07

Denny's
IHOP

But far better are smaller town diners on main streets across the nation

There's a few coming up with 10 miles of where you are

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/12/2024 13:09

I liove a Denny's breakfasts. I hope they are still a thing. it's been years since I last visited the US.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 03/12/2024 13:40

Dennys. Every time.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 03/12/2024 13:45

A 24-hour Denny's around 2am on Saturday will give you quite the experience.

I understand the appeal of a chain as a typical American experience, but please do also try one of the local recommendations, real independent diners are a completely different thing and wonderful. Although you'll be familiar because it's the difference between a wetherspoons and classic caf.

I was working out how to articulate the difference between a diner and these chain places but the spoons comparison is pretty good.
Where I'm from (NJ) a diner is an independent family business.

Denny’s and IHOP are both cheap, nasty and full of processed shite. You couldn’t pay me to go to either.

Go to a local diner like Elmo’s or Silver Spoon.

Janefx40 · 03/12/2024 22:31

Thanks everyone. We went to IHOP and loved it! But we will also go to Elmo's x
